At the end of the summer, most of us are ready for fall to arrive. We're giddy with excitement over the upcoming sweater weather, pumpkin patches, football season, and the most beautiful part—the autumn leaves.

To prepare for the most stunning time of year, SmokyMountains.com just released their annual fall foliage map, which predicts when the leaves will turn orange, yellow, and red across the country. You can use the scroll bar on the bottom of the map, shown above, to see when the autumn hues will peak in your region.
The predictive map uses an algorithm that draws on 50,000 pieces of data including historical temperatures and precipitation, forecasted temperatures and precipitation, historical leaf peak trends, and observation trends. And this year it's better than ever. "The SmokyMountains.com data model continues to improve and become more accurate each year," said data scientist Wes Melton. "Our aggregated historical and current database now includes hundreds of thousands of unique data points giving us the ability to predict more accurately than ever before."
This year's foliage will also be extra remarkable. Based on this year's findings and weather predictions, you expect autumnal leaves to be on display earlier and longer this fall. "Due to the heavier precipitation throughout the summer months, this year's leaf model is predicting an earlier-than-typical peak fall," Melton said. "Other than the Pacific Northwest, we are expecting warmer-than-average fall temperatures during the during the September through November time period. These warmer temperatures are expected to prolong the color season."
