Women in Turkey's largest city have worn goggles, masks, and helmuts during the protests in recent months to protect themselves from police officers' batons and tear gas as they challenge proposals limiting their freedoms. (The government as increasingly encroached on the country's secularism, seeking to restrict alcohol and abotions.) "The top of the pressure cooker has completely blown," says Denis, a 35-year-old filmmaker. "We're questioning everything we've been taught and have accepted as normal life . . .
