The 6 Denim Trends I’m Breaking Up With in 2026—And What I’m Wearing Instead
It’s time for a revamp.
I like to start every new year with a closet cleanout. I'll donate all the items that no longer serve me, and replace them with pieces that I’ll actually wear. In 2026, I’m especially focused on refining my denim assortment, given that my capsule wardrobe is overflowing with more than a dozen pairs of jeans. (I know it’s a bit excessive. Don’t judge me!)
So, I’ve turned to fashion’s latest runway collections to discover which denim trends are in and which are out for 2026. According to brands like Balenciaga, Dior, and Valentino, cigarette jeans have entered the chat, signaling a continued infatuation with ‘90s minimalism. Other labels such as Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard are leaning into bootcut jeans, favoring flared silhouettes that are a bit more subtle than retro bell-bottoms. And let me not forget about wide-leg jeans, which are still going strong—just ask Chanel and Stella McCartney.
Ahead, you’ll find six fresh runway-inspired 2026 denim trends that I’m loving, along with the jeans I'm swapping them for. Seeing as I’m a denim devotee, I’ve made sure to feature all the tried-and-true brands I swear by, including DL1961, Levi’s, Mother, and more.
Leaving Behind: Skinny Jeans
Loving: Cigarette Jeans
Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear: Balenciaga, Dior, and Valentino.
As someone who's deeply obsessed with ‘90s clothing, I’m thrilled to say that cigarette jeans are so back. Fashion Features Editor Emma Childs recently reported on its resurgence, stating that the vintage style emerged across several Spring 2026 runways.
Defined by a slim, cylindrical shape, cigarette jeans are ideal for those who want a slender fit, without going all the way skinny. Because, let’s be real, skinny jeans are played out. There, I said it!
Leaving Behind: Bell-Bottoms
Loving: Bootcut Jeans
Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear: Veronica Beard, Zimmermann, and Ulla Johnson.
The bohemian renaissance is very much alive and well. However, in 2026, many designers are opting for subtle bootcut constructions rather than dramatic flared shapes.
Fashion connoisseurs everywhere are loving the low-key look, including Editor-in-Chief Nikki Ogunnaike. “[There’s] something about a baby kick or a long-and-lean flare [that’s] really calling my name,” she wrote in her latest Self-Checkout newsletter.
Leaving Behind: Sweatpant Jeans
Loving: Wide-Leg Jeans
Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear: Bottega Veneta and Stella McCartney; Pre-Fall 2026: Chanel.
While there’s nothing wrong with baggy sweatpant jeans, I’m putting this look on pause for pants that offer a bit more structure. My style of choice? Wide-leg denim bottoms that resemble tailored trousers.
For outfit inspiration, I'm taking notes from Bottega Veneta, Chanel, and Stella McCartney, all of which offer chic formulas that belong in every closet.
Leaving Behind: Ultra Light-Wash Denim
Loving: Dark-Wash Denim
Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear: Celine, Coach, and Givenchy.
In the spirit of elevating my wardrobe, I’m choosing sophisticated shades of indigo that feel undeniably elegant, as opposed to ultra light-wash shades that read more casual. Paired with polished handbags and pointy heels, this denim trend will rise to any upscale occasion—whether it be a classy dinner or a night out on the town.
Leaving Behind: Studded Denim
Loving: Embroidered Denim
Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear: Ganni and Etro; Pre-Fall 2026: Veronica Beard.
The indie-sleaze apologists will come for me, but I think it’s time to let go of studded denim. After all, designers are embracing a softer feel with delicate floral details and eye-catching appliqués. Follow their lead with the selection of embroidered pieces below.
Leaving Behind: Ripped Denim
Loving: Sculptural Denim
Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear: Stella McCartney, Sacai, and Coperni.
Looking to make a statement with your denim? You can certainly do so with ripped or frayed fabrics—if you’d like to appear more modern, though, consider sculptural silhouettes. Billowing barrel jeans, asymmetrical denim skirts, and cinched denim jackets will help you to step outside the box.
