I Predict Every Stylish New Yorker Will Wear These COS Finds This Fall
Here are 23 under-$500 items worth shopping right now.
As a born-and-raised New Yorker, I know a thing or do about how we dress here in the Big Apple. We gravitate toward neutrals (read: black, white, and gray) and classic silhouettes with trendy touches. That’s why I know we’ll all be wearing pieces from COS’s new autumn collection this fall.
The capsule debuted on the runway at New York Fashion Week and is live now on COS’s website. It's full of elevated fall essentials in classic shades, alongside a few of fall 2024's biggest color trends, like burgundy. It doesn't hurt that other popular colors this season include brown and gray, hues also heavily featured within the collection. Pantone swatches aside, the just-landed assortment includes plenty of classic transitional pieces perfect for layered outfits, like fall-ready jackets and coats, cozy yet chic cashmere cardigans, and tailored vests.
But that doesn’t mean the collection is full of basics, either. There is an assortment of trendier pieces, like Katie Holmes-approved barrel-leg jeans, two-tone trench coats, and a scarf-style jacket that looks closer to a warm wool blanket than a piece of outerwear. To be clear, I mean this positively.
This all goes to say that you shouldn’t be surprised when every New Yorker (myself included) is spotted in something from COS in a month. Now is your chance to get ahead of the curve and shop the new drop before it sells out.
But don’t worry about scrolling through the dozens of pages in the brand’s “new in” section—I found 23 pieces I would add to my fall wardrobe if I didn’t have a budget. But if you do have a budget this season, everything I found costs less than $500. Keep scrolling for all of my editor-approved finds.
This scarf-style coat comes in a few colors, but this camel hue is similar to shades spotted at Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors this season.
Katie Holmes loves barrel jeans, so there's never been a better time to get a pair. This black iteration is perfect for the new season.
Square-toed ballet flats like this glossy pair are the perfect way to refresh your fall footwear assortment.
Burgundy is one of my favorite hues for the fall and winter seasons. This leather shacket can be worn on its own or layered over a black T-shirt for an easy fall work outfit.
If you're a fan of fall cardigans, try this olive green one with the same brushed look as the turtleneck above.
Bermuda shorts might be a divisive trend, but this leather pair is too elevated to pass on. I wear it with a black turtleneck for a New Yorker-approved all-black outfit.
If you want the look of a barrel-legged pant but are all set in the trendy denim department, consider this pair of trousers.
Long jackets can be tricky on petite frames. This cropped jacket solves that problem.
Another burgundy favorite of mine is this fuzzy turtleneck sweater. It looks like the perfect piece to curl up in.
This light brown vest is a great office-to-happy-hour pick. You can layer it over a white T-shirt or wear it alone.
This chunky sweater is in my cart, and I'm this close to checking out. It's a wardrobe staple that won't leave my closet (or yours) anytime soon.
You probably have a white button-down shirt in your collection, but this pin-striped one is a fresh take on the classic.
Yes, I am telling you to pick up a balaclava for the season ahead. They're the perfect mix between a hat and your favorite cashmere scarf.
This is a slightly different take on your classic sweater vest. Now, you can lean into grandpa-core without going overboard.
Denim maxi skirts are trending, but a midi-length option lets petite shoppers like myself get in on the action.
Everyone could use new black ankle boots for the season ahead. This slightly western-inspired pair feels so elevated and downright cool. Plus, they'll make your ankle boots outfits look even better.
This is the 2024 version of your classic white button-down shirt. The higher neckline makes it more fashion-forward than the others on the market today.
Wear this wrap skirt with black knee-high boots and a black bodysuit this fall and show the world you're an expert at minimalist color-blocking.
This maxi dress comes in one of my favorite shades of blue. While it's not a neutral piece by any means, it plays well with the other classic accessories in your wardrobe, like a knee-high boot or a silver hoop earring.
This is that two-tone trench coat I was talking about earlier. It's perfectly slouchy, making it a great option to wear over all of your fall and winter layers.
If you have a holiday party coming up (yes, it's almost that time of year again!) I recommend this navy blue slip option.
You can and should wear white after Labor Day. This polo dress comes in two colors—black and white—but the lighter one feels slightly sporty. Conversely, I would team it with a pair of Mary-Jane flats.
