The Costume Institute Goes 'Hipster' (VIDEO)

Preview the Costume Institute's upcoming exhibit on designer Charles James!

The Costume Institute is never afraid to take on controversial fashion statements—case in point, the Vivienne Westwood tees at this year's Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit were pretty NSFW. Still, we're intrigued that any piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is called "Hipster."

The exhibit, Charles James: Beyond Fashion will open next summer and will be on view from May 8 to Aug. 10, 2014. Of course, lucky press members and celebrities will get a sneak peek at the exhibit during next year's Costume Institute Gala on May 5, 2014, and with co-chairs including Sarah Jessica Parker and Bradley Cooper, the event is sure to be one to remember.

As a holiday gift for fashion lovers, though, the Met just released a preview of the exhibit on its website, including this gorgeous Charles James evening dress from 1946, which the museum is titling "Hipster."

In addition to photos of the stunning gown, Jan Glier Reeder, consulting curator for the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at the Met, has created a short video explaining James' intricate dress construction. Designers from Jason Wu to Christian Dior have praised James' contributions to fashion, so this is one exhibit you won't want to miss!
