The “Ugly” Summer Sandal Trend That Suddenly Looks Chic
Beloved by celebrities and designers, the nostalgic style is so back.
When I think of thong sandals, I’m instantly reminded of ‘90s It girls like Keri Russell and Jennifer Aniston. Back then, they would often wear minimalist shoes with easygoing basics like slip skirts and cropped tank tops.
Defined by simple Y-shaped straps and a streamlined silhouette, thong sandals epitomized effortless dressing—which likely explains their enduring appeal decades later.
During Spring 2026’s fashion week circuit, the sandal trend re-emerged across several runways—and designers stayed true to the style's original construction. At Fforme, thin black flip-flops were paired with Bermuda shorts, tees, and trench coats. Meanwhile, Bottega Veneta elevated the look with heeled alternatives worn alongside drop-waist dresses and woven handbags. Sacai also championed an elegant mood, teaming a square-toe version with a top-stitched skirt and a collared blouse.

Beyond the catwalks, thong sandals have also found their footing among the celebrity crowd, with many A-listers catching on to the trend early. Last summer, Hailey Bieber embraced a polished thong-sandal outfit, completing her ensemble with polka-dot capri pants and a boat-neck top. Months later, Zoë Kravitz gave the style a corporate twist, layering a sharp blazer over a button-down shirt, and finishing off the office-friendly uniform with tailored trousers.
With endless ways to wear thong sandals, I’m fully leaning into the perennial staple this summer. I already have a few pairs in rotation, but that hasn’t stopped me from adding several more to my wish list—including pieces from Staud, The Row, and Madewell.
Ahead, take a sneak peek inside my curated edit. Yes, you’ll find '90s-inspired neutrals, but you'll also spot bold prints and pops of color.
