I won’t lie, cutting my hair into a bob has been one of my biggest hacks for hair health. Having less length to manage has allowed me to really hone in on treating my main hair concerns. This means more frequent washes, steam treatments, and, of course, hair masks. As someone with quite dry, sometimes easily knotted hair, hydration has been key to restoring my 4B curls. One of the easiest and most effective ways to give my hair what it needs has been through some of my favorite hair masks.
Not only do these formulas nourish my scalp and strands, but they also double as incredible detanglers. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve skipped conditioner altogether because my favorite hair mask leaves my hair soft and pliable, letting my wide-tooth comb glide through my curls with ease. That’s the best part of my wash day, since everything post-detangling is usually a breeze.
With that said, I have been having a ball testing hair mask formulas to find the one that works best for my curly hair. From trusted classics that have held me down for almost a decade to newer formulas that have gone viral on social media, and even some higher-end options I swear by—if you’re searching for a curly hair mask, consider this list your starting point. I’ve curated only the best of the best masks that I’ve tried or that have been recommended by fellow curly-haired editors. No more procrastinating—your journey to healthy hair starts now.
The Drugstore Ones
Don’t sleep on drugstore hair products. In fact, one of my favorite hair masks of all time (that I’ve been using since I was in college) is readily available at practically any retailer that sells hair care products for under $15.
I can’t emphasize enough how this hair mask held me down in college. No matter how tangled my hair was, the Jamaican black castor oil and shea butter in this formula made my hair feel deeply nourished and practically brand new again, all for less than $20, which is important when you’re on a college student’s (basically nonexistent) budget.
I was recommended this product by a fellow curly-haired friend, and I am so glad that I listened to her and tried it for myself. Hydration, water retention, and anti-oxidative properties are the name of the game with this mask, thanks to ingredients such as resurrection flower, aloe, shea butter, and more. If you have particularly parched hair, add this to your routine stat.
My mother-in-law gifted me this hair mask once, and I have been obsessed with it ever since. Not only does it smell absolutely divine, but the formula also has fatty acids to deeply nourish each strand, as well as oils like açai, sunflower, and rosemary to help with conditioning, manageability, and slip.
The Mid-Range Options
Have a quick run to Sephora or Ulta coming up? While you’re there, pick up one of these hair masks from some of my favorite mid-range brands.
I love Beyoncé, and I love Cécred, but I am obsessed with this hair mask in a way I’m not sure I can truly articulate. At $44, it’s a little pricier, however, everything from the slip in provides, to the ultra-hydrating ingredients in the formula (hello, squalane), and the way my hair feels like it gets factory reset every time I use this mask—it’s like the singer and her mother decided to make skincare for your hair, and they nailed the prompt.
I was first introduced to this brand through its climate-control line, which helps address frizz in curlier hair textures. While exploring the brand further, I came across the Intense Hydrating Mask, which quickly took the number one spot among my favorite products from the line. From the squeeze-tube packaging that keeps application neat and mess-free, to the use of deeply hydrating ingredients like glycerin, this is one of those underrated secret weapons that will work wonders on thick, coily, or curly hair.
This mask from Ouai is particularly well-suited for people with extremely thick and dense hair. A healthy scoop of this product not only spreads beautifully, covering my entire head of hair, but also makes my hair immediately feel bouncy and hydrated. The difference pre- and post-use is incredible to feel and witness.
Davines' line of curly-hair products is one of those hair brands that I feel deserves more hype, especially the Love Curl Hair Mask. The star of the show is a noto almond extract, which is comprised of proteins, B-vitamins, and vitamin E, all of which help to fortify the strength, moisture levels, and elasticity of your curls.
This is another one of those formulas that really took me by surprise. Living Proof’s newest addition not only smells extremely fresh and uplifting, but it also works immediately. When I first started testing this product, I made sure to add extra to the dry brittle ends of my hair, and post-shower, it’s like each strand of my hair drank the tallest glass of water they could find. For moisture that lasts, pick this up.
The High-End Ones
I love a good luxury hair product as much as the next person, but it’s not often that I find one worth raving about (results can often be achieved at lower price points!). These two hair masks, however? I will sing their praises from the rooftops.
I was a little skeptical the first time I used this hair mask, but I can admit now that there was nothing to be apprehensive about. Japanese moringa oil and red micro-algae extracts are the stars of the formula, helping treat a dry scalp and deeply hydrate the hair, respectively, without weighing your hair down. If you have curly but very fine hair, this one is for you.
Oribe recently revamped its curl line, and the Eternal Curls Deep Treatment Hair Mask is better than ever. Shea and cupuaçu butters deeply moisturize each curl, and the slip is fantastic for detangling. On top of this, the jar is massive, so while it is more expensive at $66, you will definitely get a fantastic bang for your buck with this formula.
