Even though she's quick to call herself a "know-it-all," Mindy Kaling admits to having little to no knowledge about one topic in particular: the tricky world of dating.
While Kaling can't offer any pointers for your love life in her latest memoir, Why Not Me?, the actress-slash-author wants you to know she understands the struggle is all too real—which might be even more comforting than actual advice.
"As someone who is probably classified by many people as a know-it-all, this would be one area where I truly cannot," she tells People. "And I wish I could because I do have single friends and I have a lot of fun and interesting people in my life, but I am completely not helpful at all in this regard, which is terrible."
Just like you, the Mindy Project star has her own set of hang-ups when it comes to finding Mr. Right. She insists she can only "date people that I work with or that I've gone to school with. So it's like I need to be pressed into a mandatory situation with someone for many years in order to develop romantic feelings," she explains. "So that's not very helpful for other people."
The 36-year-old (who affectionately calls her relationship with ex-boyfriend and former The Office costar, B.J. Novak, "weird as hell") chalks up her shortcomings to lack of experience.
"No one needs a late bloomer in their mid-30s telling other people how to date," she says. "I go out of my way not to do that in my book."
