Whether on the red carpet or playing everyone's favorite New York City-based gynecologist Mindy Lahiri on her show "The Mindy Project," actress, writer, and producer Mindy Kaling is not one to shy away from bold color and pattern.
But at her Manhattan pied-à-terre, which was recently revamped with help from designer Sally Gotfredson and The Studio at One Kings Lane, a much more minimalist vibe shines through.
"My home in New York is a little bit more sophisticated and minimalist, whereas my style in LA is just everything I've accumulated over the past fifteen years," Kaling told One Kings Lane.
Indeed, when we got a peek of her Los Angeles home on Instagram back in 2013, the place was brimming with an eclectic mix of furnishings and accessories.
The recent update in Manhattan, however, keeps with a neutral palette, layering in midcentury-meets-Moroccan elements over a crisp black and white foundation.
"The first time I walked into the space after One Kings Lane designed it, I thought, 'Who is this chic person who lives here?' It's not me, it looks amazing!" says Kaling, who found inspiration from Instagram when brainstorming the new design scheme.
The star cites designer Katie Ridder, One Kings Lane, and ELLE DECOR as some of her favorite accounts. "And then I just follow a bunch of beautiful celebrities because sometimes they post inside of their house and you can try to eek out their style from stalking them online," she adds.
For Kaling, it's hard to choose just one favorite item in her revamped apartment, which she also uses to do work from home.
"I don't have an office here, but the truth is that I don't write in an office. Any time I have a desk it just goes to waste," she says. "So, I like to sit on my sofa, with my laptop, look out the window and just get inspired... sometimes fall asleep watching some TV."
And there's a ton to be inspired by inside Kaling's apartment as well, from the beautiful wood console that sits beneath her TV to the light fixture made of wine glasses that hangs above her breakfast nook. Not to mention, the number of colorful prints hanging throughout the space.
As for the Moroccan pillow sitting on the living room floor, Kaling quips: the piece looks like something made for the "chicest, most elegant dog, ever, to hang out on...but I would never let a dog sit on it."
Another game changer for the star: the scones in the bedroom.
"I always used to get a really bulky lamp and put it on my nightstand so I could never keep anything else on my nightstand," Kaling says. "Sally had this brilliant idea of putting sconces there so you have all this room free for all your things, like your prescription medicines, which I have very many. I'm just kidding, I don't but that was brilliant and I love that."
If you love the look, too, the furnishings featured in Kaling's Manhattan abode are currently on sale at One Kings Lane.
