Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Haven’t Spoken "Directly in Over a Year"

William and Harry's rift has made it "very hard for them to be friends or even friendly.”

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are reportedly not in communication at the moment—and haven't been for some time. Us Weekly reports that the duchesses haven't spoken to each other “directly in over a year," with a source saying tension between Prince William and Prince Harry is the reason.

“They were never that close, but the reason they’re not speaking is because of the rift between Prince Harry and Prince William,” a source says. “Harry and William have communicated sparingly over the last year, but none of their communications have been friendly in quite some time. There is real animosity that the brothers have toward one another, and that has spilled over to Meghan and Kate’s relationship, making it very hard for them to be friends or even friendly.”

Meghan herself opened up about her relationship with Kate during her sit-down interview with Oprah, saying that reports she made her sister-in-law crying during a pre-wedding flower girl dress fitting were false.

“A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something—yes, the issue was correct, about the flower girl dresses—and it made me cry and it really hurt my feelings," Meghan explained. "And I thought in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding, it didn’t make sense to not be just doing whatever everyone else is doing, which was trying to be supportive knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot.”

Meghan added that Kate had “apologized and I [have] forgiven her" and said "If you love me, you don’t have to hate [Kate], and if you love her, you don’t have to hate me.”

Kate hasn't commented on Meghan's remarks to Oprah, but Buckingham Palace has issued the following statement on the interview in general:

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
