Back in the fall, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver started a hashtag campaign called #NotMyChristian in which he antagonized Fifty Shades fans by suggesting that Christian Grey should have been played by someone other than Jamie Dornan. But on Sunday, John offered a "condescending, half-hearted apology" for insulting Jamie. "I'm sorry if anyone was offended by my incredibly accurate evaluation of the casting choice for a movie whose target audience, going by the trailer, seems to be suburban mothers of three who have somehow never had sex before," John said. "My real complaint is Hollywood's unimaginative casting. When it came time to cast Christian Grey, a character described by Fifty Shades author E.L. James as 'the epitome of male beauty,' they found an actor who specializes in handsome. I guess what I'm driving at is, it hurts not to have even been asked."
And then he auditions for the role, right then and there, despite the fact that the movie is nearing completion and premieres in less than a month. "According to Wikipedia, I'm ready to take a young woman on a journey from frumpy nerd to fully realized sexual being," he says as Christian. "This is a thing that I, Christian Grey, feel totally comfortable talking about doing." If you always wished that Mr. Grey had a better sense of humor, then perhaps John Oliver really should have been your Christian. To quote John one more time: "Either way, I'm presuming this is all gonna end in butt stuff."
