Three women and seven men were beheaded by ISIS near the town of Kobani, Syria Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports. They were members of Kurdish fighting forces and were captured during an ongoing battle for the town, which is located near the Turkish border. Kobani has been a center of serious fighting since mid-September, when ISIS began its push to take over the region.
"I don't know why they were arrested or beheaded. Only the Islamic State knows why. They want to scare people," Syrian Observatory chief Rami Abdulrahman told Reuters. Images of the women's heads on top of cement blocks were posted to various social media channels.
Photographer Erin Trieb recently interviewed and photographed members of the Kurdish group, some of whom were as young as 12. Read more about their efforts here.
