This 3-Second Styling Trick Makes My Outfits Feel So Elevated

Minimal effort, maximum results.

There’s one accessory I return to time and again. It’s something subtle, almost invisible at first glance, but it can transform an outfit within seconds. I'm talking about a belt! Not just any belt—a considered, intentional one.

For me, the purpose of a belt stretches far beyond holding up a pair of trousers—it’s a styling trick that adds structure. I often say that an outfit without a belt can feel a bit unfinished, especially when you’re dealing with layered knits, tailored separates, and oversized silhouettes.

Whether styled over a skirt, denim pants, or outerwear, a polished belt cinched at the waist can instantly provide shape and sophistication. It draws attention to the center of the body, balancing proportions and making the simplest pieces look put-together.

Take, for example, this look which I wear on repeat. It features a range of casual staples like a chunky gray cardigan, jeans, and a white tee. But the moment I slip on my sleek Amanu leather belt, decorated with an oversized silver buckle, my laid-back outfit suddenly feels styled. Albeit subtle, this thoughtfully-placed accessory is guaranteed to make someone look twice.

Sometimes, there are moments when I let my belt take the lead. I styled this low-slung Western belt with a mini skirt and a soft butter yellow knit for an extra touch of personality and dimension.

With chic belts, the styling opportunities are endless. You can knot them, double wrap them, or layer them like jewelry. If you have a longer torso, place your belt a bit higher. If you want to elongate your legs, arrange it at the waist.

Belts also allow you to reimagine certain pieces. A shapeless dress becomes sculpted; a billowing coat embraces an hourglass shape; a simple jeans-and-tee outfit champions intentionality.

In this case, a leather jacket is further enhanced with mixed metal.

The next time you feel your outfit is missing something, consider a belt. It might be the smallest detail in your wardrobe, but I promise, it’s the one piece that makes everything look elevated.
