14 Chunky Sneakers Worth Trading in Your Summer Sandals For

Design by Morgan McMullen

After a heated internal debate with myself, I've decided I'm 100 percent pro-dad sneakers. Though the trend started last year, retailers are now releasing even more chunky kicks for spring/summer 2019. These sneakers come in all colors, from Easter pinks and blues to prints like zebra and leopard. Some brands, like Joshua Sanders, even combined two trends into one—the PVC dad sneaker.

This all goes to show that chunky soles aren't going anywhere this season. If you have yet to find your dad sneaker solemate, I'm here to help. I found 14 of the best pairs to shop right now.

Best for Summer
Air Max 270 React Felt and Ripstop Sneakers
Nike net-a-porter.com

For a dad sneaker that actually looks like a dad sneaker (without borrowing your pop's), try these multi-colored kicks from Nike. The hues were inspired by art—and, most recently, the ladies on The U.S. Women's soccer team wore them with sweats. This will look just as casual, if not cooler, with your slip dress or billowy maxi skirt.

Women's Ultrapace Sneaker
Gucci gucci.com

These sneakers first appeared on the fall 2019 runways of Gucci and now they're finally available to purchase. The muti-colored footwear features distressed suede, metallic leather, and reflective fabric to give it a statement shine. Style with a white dress for summer and boyfriend jeans for the fall.

Best for Lace Haters
Climb Sneakers
Jeffrey Campbell shopbop.com

The stand-out detail on this pair of Jeffrey Campbell kicks is the use of buckles in lieu of laces. For those of us who are tired of tying and retying shoe laces, you'll find comfort in knowing these buckles won't unlace themselves as you walk down the street. The maroon and brown colors are perfect for wearing into autumn, too.

Best For Golden Goose Fans
Running Sole Glitter Sneakers
Golden Goose net-a-porter.com

Golden Goose's beat-up and "dirty" sneaker aesthetic is iconic, but the brand has cleaned it up for its new Running Sole sneakers. The label dropped its own dad sneaker iteration that features leather, suede, and a glittery sole complete with the Golden Goose star logo. These squeaky-clean sneakers will look better with each wear and scuff—just as the brand intended.

Best for the Luxe Life
Platform Sneaker
Prada nordstrom.com

Don't underestimate this sneaker—it's not as plain as you think. The shoe has black-and-white pattern laces for a "look down here" statement and if that's not enough, there's always the brand's signature Prada lettering on the front and on the sides.

Best for '80s Lovers
Avalanche Rad
Koio koio.co

I can 100 percent imagine Erica Sinclair of Stranger Things wearing these '80s-inspired sneakers. (Have you seen her colorful outfits?) The yellow, plum, and teal surprisingly work well together while the perfectly chunky sole gives it that signature dad sneaker stamp. Wear with high-waisted denim shorts and a white puff-shoulder top.

Best for Nature Enthusiasts
A1 Hiker Sneakers
Alexander Wang shopbop.com

These are your dad-has-gone-hiking-sneakers. With these on, you'll be able to conquer any uphill, or downhill, climb with ease and won't even feel the snap of twigs beneath your feet. Style with baggy jeans for that classic Alexander Wang look or with workout shorts for a more sporty touch.

Best for Print Lovers
Sneakers With Animal Print Pieces
Zara zara.com

Not sure if you'll throw down $200 for chunky sneakers, but want to try a pair? Your journey will likely begin at trend-driven Zara, where you'll have a plethora of sneakers to choose from. In addition to Zara's subdued neutral pairs, the fast-fashion destination offers more unexpected sneakers—like this zebra design that, surprisingly, looks good with a floral dress.

Blade Runner Sneakers
Jeffrey Campbell shopbop.com

I love a good velcro sneaker when I can't be bothered with laces. (Monday mornings are rough, y'all.) This one-strap contraption and it's all-white color makes it easy for you to just slip on and go. The bulky and futuristic design highlights the evolution takes the '90s dad sneaker into the 21st century.

Best for the Cool Girl
Meena 2 Sneaker
Sam Edelman zappos.com

My personal go-to for shoes that are trendy, but comfortable and affordable? Sam Edelman. While these sneakers clearly draw its inspo from the Balenciaga versions, fans will find the price point irresistible. Give these a test run, then if you decide you definitely need more dad sneakers, upgrade with a designer pair that will take you through to 2020.

Best for a Budget
Maxi Sole Sneakers
Mango mango.com

For those seeking a non-stark white sneaker, you'll love this pair from Mango. The cream and peach colors give it a softness and feminine feel compared to darker pairs like black and navy. Despite the coloring, it'll pair easily with everything in your spring wardrobe.

Best for Floral Lovers
Jackye Dad Sneakers
Schutz shopbop.com

I've had my eye on this sold-out floral sneaker from Schutz since last season and it's finally back in stock (!!). The blooming floral print coupled with the chunky sole gives it street style cred, and I can see myself wearing this with a white summer dress or high-waisted mom jeans.

Best for Matching
Zenith White PVC Sneakers
Joshua Sanders shopbop.com

It was only a matter of time before someone combined the PVC trend with dad sneakers. This Joshua Sanders pair allows you to show off your springtime socks and presents a cool spin on the chunky sneaker look. Meanwhile, the leather cowhide on the exterior gives the footwear a luxe quality.

Best for Tomboys
Silver Shadow RGS Suede and Mesh Trainers
Hi-Tec HTS74 matchesfashion.com

Hi-Tec HTS74's trainers were first introduced in 1981 and worn by German and British army recruits. In this 2019 updated leather version, it's created with suede panelling and a "Rollin Gait System" on the midsole and outsole to support the natural movement of the foot. You can bet the comfort level on this shoe is a firm 10/10.
