The Perfect Kale Smoothie

Based out of the University of California, Davis, the researcher, speaker, and author of the popular blog turned book Sistah Vegan has a nonstop schedule. To stay balanced, she crafted the perfect kale smoothie. "This recipe is packed with nutrients that boost your immune system and fuel energy."


5 large lacinato kale leaves, de-spined

1 large ruby-red grapefruit

1 tsp. Hawaiian spirulina powder (available at health-food stores or

16 oz. water

1 to 1¼ in. fresh ginger root

4 ice cubes

2 pitted dates (optional sweetener)

½ medium avocado

Put all ingredients in a blender on high for about 1½ minutes. Pour into a sealable glass to sip during commutes.
