THE BOTTOM LINE

An easy update for kohl-lined eyes? Flip it. As seen on the Matthew Williamson runway for spring, this edgier take adds modernity to the classic standby. Makeup artist Ashley Ward, who created the look here, recommends using kohl liner to create crayonlike soft edges. She balances the intense eye with nude lipstick and coral powder on the cheeks and forehead. And keep shimmer to a minimum: "If you go too iridescent, it looks clownish," she explains. "A matte finish makes the look more powerful."

DROP-RED GORGEOUS

Old-school glamour meets all-American girl in this fresh-face/red-lip duo. Notes Ward, "It's the startling beauty of a prom queen who requires very little makeup." All you need: apricot blush to warm up the skin and a sweep of opalescent eyeshadow. For lips, start with an orangey red liner, then glide on a creamy lipstick.

PURPLE GAZE

Inspired by the faces at Temperley, Ward likens this dramatic evening look to "the women Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin shot in the '70s." When picking a shade, avoid violets with too much red, which tend to appear garish. Add a healthy flush with a dusty-pink matte blush, suggests our pro. "A muted, Elizabethan-era rose gives the face an almost porcelain-doll appearance that accentuates the eyes."

BLUE'S CLUES

Inspired by this season's Gucci show, "this look is for the woman who is all about having fun," says Ward. Here, she started with liner: a black liquid first to define the shape, followed by a kohl pencil and colored shadow to add texture. When selecting a shade of turquoise, consider your skin tone: "On most people, I try to avoid yellowish shades because they make the skin look sallow. Pale skin types benefit from cooler blues that give the look more of a smoldering quality."
