Spring 2012 Trend Alert: Tee Up for These Golf-Inspired Looks

The worlds of fashion and sports have merged in a big way in recent seasons — from Alexander Wang's legendary football-inspired Spring 2010 collection, to the prominence of baseball jackets for fall (as seen at Proenza Schouler, Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, and Rag & Bone), to basketball stars like Dwayne Wade and LeBron James joining editors front row at runway shows, these two seemingly opposite cultures have collided.

It looks like the latest sport to inspire designers around the globe is the classic game of golf, but the pieces are a far cry from the preppy, literal iteration you might be expecting. In London, Christopher Kane showed cable knit vests paired with metallic and floral skirts, while Christopher Bailey at Burberry presented his own spin on the pom-pom adorned golf cap. In New York, Alexander Wang strapped golf bags onto the backs of his models, and if his must-have accessories from previous seasons are any indication, these babies are probably going to fly out of stores.

To further drive the point home, there were golf visors on the runway at Marc by Marc Jacobs for Spring 2012, and similar hats were also a main focus in the Balenciaga Resort 2012 collection. So, if you're wondering what type of gear you should be saving up for in order to look sporty and stylish next spring, this one's a gimme.
