Beauty Going To Extremes

Fabio Pettinari
Sleek & Straight

Also seen at: Michael Kors, Zac Posen

Star turns: Rachel Bilson, Chloe; Sevigny

Get The Look: "The long, blunt style screams well-bred and feminine," says Bumble and Bumble stylist Jimmy Paul. Fortunately, you don't need a trust fund to rock this 'do, just healthy, medium-to-thick hair. (Spritz fine strands with volumizing spray.) "You want the ends to be a little heavy, so apply leave-in conditioner or styling cream to them before blowing out," says Paul. Finish by lightly running a flatiron through dry hair.

MC Recommends: Dove Advanced Care Sheer Moisture Anti-Frizz Finishing Cream; Vavoom Heat Gold Blow-In Control (for a matte but frizz-free texture); Goody So Hot Ceramic Flat Iron Comb

Subtle Arches

Also seen at: Ralph Lauren, Tuleh

Star turns: Kirsten Dunst, Sandra Oh

Get The Look: "Clean, precise brows are always classic," says Espinet. "And for those with fair hair, they're low-maintenance, too." Use light-colored pencils or powders sparingly when defining the arch to avoid looking really harsh; it's better to tweeze under the highest point and brush them into the shape you want with a clear eyebrow gel.

MC Recommends: Sally Hansen La Cross Tweezer; Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Clear (which invisibly holds hairs right where you want them); CoverGirl Brow & Eyemakers (a light-taupe pencil for subtle definition)

Power Pout

Also seen at: Proenza Schouler, Moschino Cheap & Chic

Star turns: Gwen Stefani, Evan Rachel Wood

Get The Look: Blame it on fashion. The rich jewel tones of fall's clothing and accessories are prompting Pop lip colors, says Westman - "and there's just enough edge to keep them from getting precious." The key is in the application, says Espinet, who advises focusing color on lips alone: "Adding bright cheeks and smoky eyes will have you looking like a traffic light." It will appear most natural if you work the color from the middle out to the corners.

MC Recommends: L'Oreal Paris Colour Juice Lip Gloss in Raspberry Smash (a sheer rendition of berry and a fall fave); Rimmel Exaggerate Full Color Lip Liner in Pure; Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Wild Orchid

Nude Lips

Also seen at: Givenchy, Stella McCartney

Star turns: Angelina Jolie, Joy Bryant

Get The Look: A barely there nude instantly plumps and looks appealing. Remember, too, that dry lips are more noticeable with sheers, so exfoliate with a damp washcloth and pile on the lip balm. "I like to pat the lipstick in with my finger for a more precise-but-muted finish," says Westman. If you're going for a monochromatic look, polished skin - helped along with concealer, a little foundation, and a nude cream blush - is crucial.

MC Recommends: MAC Lipstick in Brew; Estee Lauder High Gloss in Ivory (a sparkly accent for night); Lancôme Baume Raiser in Rose Marshmallow

Dan Lecca

Standout Brows

Also seen at: Chanel, Carolina Herrera

Star turns: Jennifer Connelly, America Ferrera

Get The Look: If you're naturally full-browed (or inspired by the turned out secretaries on Mad Men), this is the time to go for it. "Strong brows say sexy and serious at once and also complement the season's structured clothes," says MAC's chief makeup artist, Gordon Espinet. "Start with a powder or cream where you have the least hair and fill in subtly," adds Lancôme Artistic Director Gucci Westman.

MC Recommends: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector (a dab of creamy highlighter under your arches defines without additional plucking); Sonia Kashuk Brow Kit Arch Alert (which includes a brush and mini spoolie); Trish McEvoy Brow Builder

Volume & Texture

Also seen at: Dsquared, Miu Miu

Star turns: Kate Moss, Mandy Moore

Get The Look: "This is all about whimsy - and it's great for shaking up the season's highly sophisticated clothes," says Paul. Run a volumizer through damp hair and blowdry while shaking it through your fingers. Then, using rollers, wrap 2-inch sections vertically, starting at the middle of the shaft and moving toward the ends. "You get a more natural wave when you don't curl from root to tip," Paul says. Then shake or brush through and let hair settle.

MC Recommends: VO5 Curvaceous Curls Styling Mousse; L'Oreal Professionnel Texture Expert Volume elevation; Adjustacurl rollers (customizable rollers that really add lift to any length)
