Milky Toners Are a Tall Drink of Water for My Thirsty Skin
Goodbye, dry skin.
I’ve always been a fan of simple skincare routines. Give me a good face wash, moisturizer, and sunscreen, and I’m set. But now that I’m a beauty editor in my thirties, I’ve learned that preventive care makes all the difference. That means expanding my daily routine to include serums, eye creams, and, most importantly, milky toners—the step I didn't know I was missing, but now won't skip.
And if you’ve been seeing milky toners all over your social feeds, that’s because people are starting to catch on to how such a simple step can result in glassy, glowing skin. Milky toners can be a helpful step to boost hydration, soothe irritation, and support the skin barrier,” says board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, M.D. In addition, they can also prep the skin for the next steps of a skincare routine, she adds.
While traditional toners can be beneficial in some routines, dermatologists note that many contain drying or irritating ingredients, such as alcohols and astringents. Because of that, board-certified dermatologist Hadley King, M.D., says milky toners (which don't have alcohols or astringents) are the MVP across a range of skin types—from mature skin that’s more prone to dryness to combination and sensitive skin that needs balance without irritation. They’re gentler by nature, offering more hydration and barrier support without becoming heavy. “They work like a hybrid of a toner and a light essence that moisturizes the skin,” Dr. King adds.
Since there are many formulas to choose from, I tested a few top-rated brands and consulted skincare experts to identify milky toners worth buying.
The Best Milky Toners
- The Best Overall Milky Toner: Kiehl’s Daily Milk-Peel Toner
- The Best Milky Toner for Dry Skin: Laneige Cream Skin Refillable Milky Toner
- Best Milky Toner for Sensitive Skin: Byoma Hydrating Milky Toner
- Best Milky Toner for Mature Skin: Beekman 1802 Milk Shake
- The Best Drugstore Milky Toner: Thayers Milky Hydrating Toner
When Dr. Hadley told me to expect instant hydration, softness, and a smoother texture from a milky toner, she wasn’t exaggerating. This milk-peel formula delivers all of that and more. It gently exfoliates and lifts away dead skin cells with lipo-hydroxy acids (think of it as a mild, friendly version of a chemical peel), revealing smoother, brighter-looking skin. Plus, the almond milk and emollient ingredients help keep the skin barrier hydrated and nourished, making it gentle enough for everyday use.
Key Ingredients: Lipo-hydroxy acid; Almond milk; Vitamin E; Squalane; Safflower seed oil
Size: 6.8 fl oz
Skin Type: Safe for all skin types
What I Love: Skin feels softer and smoother after use; Absorbs quickly; Gently exfoliates
What I Don’t: Some reviewers say the packaging causes leaks
Review for MC: “At first, I was a bit hesitant about testing this product due to the name 'milk-peel' because I have sensitive skin, but after multiple uses, I was pleasantly surprised to see only positive results. It gently exfoliates and helps my skin look brighter and feel smoother, and the formula didn’t cause any irritations or breakouts.” — Shauna Beni-Haynes, Freelance Beauty Contributor

What happens when a cream is whipped and broken down using a high-pressure Korean microblending technology—a process that emulsifies rich ingredients into an ultra-fine, fluid texture? You get this deeply hydrating milky toner, of course. As an MC editor favorite, it’s loaded with nourishing ceramides and peptides to boost radiance, firm the skin, and deliver lasting hydration. The formulation comes straight from Seoul, where cosmetic chemists are the leading innovators of pushing the boundaries of glowing, glassy skincare products.
Key Ingredients: White lead tea; Ceramide; Peptide complex
Size: 50ml, 170ml, 320ml
Skin Type: Normal, Dry, Combination, and Oily
What I Love: Hydrating; Makes skin super soft; Feels lightweight
What I Don’t: Some reviewers report packaging issues, including leaks and spills
Review for MC: “I’m happy with the results I got from this milky toner, but I wish the texture were thicker and more milky—it feels a bit runny and watery. I prefer applying it with my fingers and patting it in. It absorbs quickly and leaves a nice, glowy finish.” — Shauna Beni-Haynes, Freelance Beauty Contributor

This toner meets all criteria for being safe for sensitive skin. The formula is alcohol- and fragrance-free and has been dermatologist-tested and approved. It calms and soothes the skin while reducing the appearance of redness, hyperpigmentation, and breakouts, thanks to the brand's barrier lipid complex, which includes anti-inflammatory ingredients such as centella asiatica and panthenol.
Key Ingredients: Barrier lipid complex; Polyglutamic acid; Cica
Size: 1.69, 5.07 fl oz
Skin Type: All Skin Types
What I Love: Reduces redness; Treats hyperpigmentation; Hydrating
What I Don’t: Some reviewers say it feels too watery
Review for MC: “This toner feels superlight and hydrating. After consistent use, I noticed a difference in my hyperpigmentation scars; they started to look less dark, which is a major plus for me. The formula is also very hydrating, and I noticed my skin felt moisturized for up to eight hours.” — Shauna Beni-Haynes, Freelance Beauty Contributor

This multitasking toner deserves a spot in your skincare routine. It doubles as a post-gym refresher, a makeup setting spray, and a soothing post-sun treatment. The star ingredient is mugwort—a buzzy Korean skincare plant known for calming the skin and unclogging pores. With each spritz, skin feels refreshed, hydrated, and visibly glowy.
Key Ingredients: Mugwort; Squalene; Hyalurnic Acid
Size: 2, 8.1 fl oz
Skin Type: Safe for sensitive skin
What I Love: Minimizes pores; Deeply hydrates; Balances skin
What I Don’t: Some reviewers say that frequent use throughout the day can cause oiliness
Review for MC: “This toner was so pleasant to use. I love that it came in a mist bottle and every time I sprayed it across my face, it felt like a nice facial pick-me-up refresher me, thanks to the cooling sensation it gives.” — Shauna Beni-Haynes, Freelance Beauty Contributor

Those with dry, sensitive, or mature skin types especially benefit from milky toners, which deliver hydration and support the skin barrier. "These formulas can also be very soothing for anyone experiencing irritation or sensitivity. One example is the Thayers Hydrating Milky Toner, which combines hyaluronic acid and snow mushroom to boost hydration while prepping the skin and supporting the skin barrier,” says Dr. Garshick.
Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid; Snow mushroom
Size: 12 fl oz
Skin Type: Normal to Dry Skin
What I Love: Hydrating; Radiant finish; Fragrance-free
What I Don’t: Some reviewers note that it doesn't remove all traces of makeup
Review for MC: “This toner feels very cooling when applied onto the skin and dries down quickly. I didn't notice any tightness or dry feeling after using the toner. My skin actually felt softer and hydrated, and I loved the dewy-looking finish, too.” — Shauna Beni-Haynes, Freelance Beauty Contributor

Winter weather is notorious for drying out the skin, which makes a hydrating toner a must in your daily skincare routine. This pick from Fenty Beauty doubles as a toner-essence hybrid that helps strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier and visibly minimize the look of pores—the latter thanks to its hero ingredient, niacinamide, which helps brighten the skin and fade dark spots. Its thick, milky texture absorbs instantly with just a few quick massages into the skin, and it has a delicious fragrance inspired by the tropical fruits and flowers of the Caribbean.
Key Ingredients: Niacinamide; Tamarind; Hyaluronic acid; Panthenol
Size: 5 fl oz
Skin Type: Normal, Dry, Combination, and Oily
What I Love: Lightens dark spots; Super hydrating; Dries quickly
What I Don’t: Fragrance may irritate those with sensitive skin
Review for MC: “Whenever I break out, I’m left dealing with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so I always look for skincare with brightening ingredients to help fade those dark spots. With consistent use, this toner genuinely made a difference and helped even out my complexion. I also love that it smells amazing with a light, tropical fruit-and-floral scent (but keep in mind fragrances are not good for all sensitive skin types)." — Shauna Beni-Haynes, Freelance Beauty Contributor

After chatting with Dr. Garshick and reviewing my toner collection, I realized that many of my traditional toners were leaving my skin tight and dry because of their ingredients. “Heavy fragrances or drying alcohols can be irritating to the skin,” Dr. Garshick explains. This alcohol-free milky toner by Kylie Skin fits the bill. It’s made with avocado oil and apple fruit extract, which work to soften, condition, and comfort the skin. It also has major moisturizing ingredients, but a lightweight milky texture that dries down quickly, leaving a brighter, more hydrated-looking complexion.
Key Ingredients: Squalene; Avocado oil; Apple Fruit Extract
Size: 8 fl oz
Skin Type: All skin types
What I Love: Feels soothing; Hydrating; Alcohol-Free Formula
What I Don’t: Fragrance may irritate sensitive skin
Review for MC: “When I apply this toner after cleansing, I love that it doesn’t leave my skin feeling stiff or tight. Instead, it restores the moisture my face wash removes and gives my skin a soothing, cooling sensation. I recommend using a cotton pad rather than your fingers, since the formula is a bit sticky and can get messy.” — Shauna Beni-Haynes, Freelance Beauty Contributor

Do Milky Toners Actually Work?
According to Dr. King and Dr. Garshick, milky toners are definitely worth adding to your skincare routine. “You'll see immediate hydration and plumping, improved softness and smoother texture, and less tightness after cleansing,” says Dr. King. And with consistent use, you may even see a strengthened skin barrier, she adds. "They're optional but particularly helpful if you have a compromised skin barrier and want lightweight hydration without heaviness."
What to Look for in a Toner
- Ingredients
"Look for key ingredients including humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, as well as barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides. Soothing ingredients like allantoin or centella asiatica can also be helpful for sensitive skin," explains Dr. Garshick.
“If you’re acne-prone, it’s best to avoid heavier oils that may clog pores,” she adds. And as a rule of thumb, Dr. Garshick says, when choosing a toner, steer clear of heavy fragrance and drying alcohols, which can be irritating to the skin.
