Milky Toners Are a Tall Drink of Water for My Thirsty Skin

Goodbye, dry skin.

I’ve always been a fan of simple skincare routines. Give me a good face wash, moisturizer, and sunscreen, and I’m set. But now that I’m a beauty editor in my thirties, I’ve learned that preventive care makes all the difference. That means expanding my daily routine to include serums, eye creams, and, most importantly, milky toners—the step I didn't know I was missing, but now won't skip.

And if you’ve been seeing milky toners all over your social feeds, that’s because people are starting to catch on to how such a simple step can result in glassy, glowing skin. Milky toners can be a helpful step to boost hydration, soothe irritation, and support the skin barrier,” says board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, M.D. In addition, they can also prep the skin for the next steps of a skincare routine, she adds.

While traditional toners can be beneficial in some routines, dermatologists note that many contain drying or irritating ingredients, such as alcohols and astringents. Because of that, board-certified dermatologist Hadley King, M.D., says milky toners (which don't have alcohols or astringents) are the MVP across a range of skin types—from mature skin that’s more prone to dryness to combination and sensitive skin that needs balance without irritation. They’re gentler by nature, offering more hydration and barrier support without becoming heavy. “They work like a hybrid of a toner and a light essence that moisturizes the skin,” Dr. King adds.

Since there are many formulas to choose from, I tested a few top-rated brands and consulted skincare experts to identify milky toners worth buying.

The Best Milky Toners

Do Milky Toners Actually Work?

According to Dr. King and Dr. Garshick, milky toners are definitely worth adding to your skincare routine. “You'll see immediate hydration and plumping, improved softness and smoother texture, and less tightness after cleansing,” says Dr. King. And with consistent use, you may even see a strengthened skin barrier, she adds. "They're optional but particularly helpful if you have a compromised skin barrier and want lightweight hydration without heaviness."

What to Look for in a Toner

  • Ingredients

"Look for key ingredients including humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, as well as barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides. Soothing ingredients like allantoin or centella asiatica can also be helpful for sensitive skin," explains Dr. Garshick.

“If you’re acne-prone, it’s best to avoid heavier oils that may clog pores,” she adds. And as a rule of thumb, Dr. Garshick says, when choosing a toner, steer clear of heavy fragrance and drying alcohols, which can be irritating to the skin.
