In this month's issue of Marie Claire, we asked: Is the C-word having a moment — thanks to its prominent appearance in the movie Atonement? Now comes further evidence: On this morning's Today show, in which Meredith Vieira interviewed 70-year-old Jane Fonda about the Vagina Monologues, she actually dropped the C-bomb.
Meredith: "You, at first, weren't a big fan of the play. What turned you around?"
Jane: "It's not that I was not a big fan. I hadn't seen the play. I live in Georgia. I was asked to do a monologue called cunt. And I said, 'I don't think so. I got enough problems.'"
Meredith was as stunned as we were, and issued an apology to viewers a few minutes later, after Willard Scott gave shout-outs to some old people. What does the C-word mean to Meredith? "Jane Fonda inadvertently said a word from the play that you don't say on television. It was a slip and obviously she apologizes, and so do we. We would do nothing to offend the audience. So please accept that apology."
