While President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama's recent dinner at Kensington Palace brought us these magical moments with Prince George, the occasion also allowed cameras into Apartment 1A, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge make their home when they're in London.
There's a lot to take in from the few photos that have been released of the evening. It's a rare look inside the 22-room residence that Will, Kate, George, and Charlotte call one of their homes. Here's what we can tell you about the royal family and how they live:
1. They like decorating with lamps.
There are six table lamps from just this one angle of this room, which appears to be a kind of parlor with views onto the garden. There are at least two more table lamps out of frame, which adds up to at least eight lamps. That is a lot of lighting.
2. They also like to decorate with family photos.
There are a few framed photos of Kate by herself on top of the piano, and one amazing photo of Will from his St. Andrews days (we think) on a side table.
Here's a reminder of Will in his St. Andrews days:
3. There are window seats looking out onto the garden.
We imagine the family spending rainy afternoons sitting and reading to each other on their window seats. Or just riding their rocking horses gifted to them by the Obamas.
4. There's a stuffed Bo doll hanging out on top of the ottoman.
Also a gift from the Obamas to George when his sister Charlotte was born. I like to think the doll's casual presence in the room means that George is allowed to run around the house throwing toys everywhere and not that it was a carefully staged and symbolic gesture. Alright, so hosting pro-tip: When you're expecting guests, drag the thing they gave you the last time out of the hall closet and put it out in a prominent place.
5. They keep their bar on a table.
Bar carts are lovely, but this family isn't about that.
6. They like a good candle.
A hefty three-wick number too (they last longer).
7. They like a nicely layered floor.
There's a neutral, oatmeal-colored carpet going across the entire room, but in the center, there's a large patterned rug grounding the seating area.
8. They hang their curtains the right length.
Having drapes that go from floor to ceiling and bunch up at the bottom like that is the height of decorative elegance — at least when it comes to curtains.
9. They like pillows!
Lots of pillows. Well, they need them. Those sofas are so deep that even Kate, who's 5-foot-9, has to lean against two pillows in order to sit up straight.
10. Will takes his water with lemon.
It's really good for you, we're told—and Will seems like the kind of guy who cares about that stuff.
11. They own books.
See previous comment about rainy days and window seats. You need things to read for that.
