Actress Shannen Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in March of last year, and has been open about her struggle with the disease. Now, she has posted raw, emotional photos of her shaving her head while dealing with the effects of cancer treatment.
Doherty revealed her diagnosis in a lawsuit against her former business management firm. She claimed that the firm allowed her health insurance coverage to run out, and that meant that she couldn't get a diagnosis until later, when she renewed her coverage herself, according to the New York Daily News. (The firm denies any wrongdoing.)
In February, the 45-year-old went on The Dr. Oz Show to talk about her treatment; she said she would undergo surgery, but she wasn't sure which type. "Ultimately, they're just breasts, right? I mean, I love them, they're mine, they're beautiful, but in the grand scheme of things, I would rather be alive and I would rather grow old with my husband," she said. She also noted that her cancer has hurt her career, since people think she's too sick to be on set.
This week, Doherty documented the step by step process of shaving her head, with her mother and her friend by her side the whole time.
"I couldn't be prouder of you today," Doherty's friend, Anne Kortright-Shilstat, wrote on Instagram. "Your strength and courage is so inspiring and I am so very lucky to have you in my life. Thank you for blindly trusting me today to help you with such a big step. I will forever be there for you no matter what."
