Divergent star Shailene Woodley was arrested for criminal trespassing while peacefully protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline with hundreds of other protestors. Footage of the arrest was streamed live to roughly 40,000 viewers on Shailene's Facebook page and according to her account on the stream, she was the only protestor arrested.
Shailene has been an outspoken ally in the fight to stop the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline that passes through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois. The controversial pipeline would transport oil across the four states, but because it runs within a half-mile of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's reservation, protestors believe it will threaten their main water source and destroy some of its sacred sites.
According to Shailene's statements during the video, riot police told the protestors to leave the area they were in because they were trespassing, and so Shailene and fellow protestors began to move. But when the actress arrived at her RV, police were waiting there to arrest her.
In the last four minutes of her stream, Shailene is approached by a police officer and told she's being arrested for criminal trespassing. Shailene attempts to ask why she is the only person being arrested, but the police officer interrupts her, saying, "I'm not going to answer your questions right now." When Shailene won't relent questioning the officer, he answers, claiming she was the only protester identified trespassing.
"I'm being arrested. I was down there with everybody else. It's because I'm well known. It's because I have 40,000 people watching. So everybody knows, we were going to our vehicle, which they had surrounded and waiting for me with giant guns in the giant truck behind them just so they could arrest me," Shailene says during the live stream before she's taken away by the police.
Now, Twitter has questions regarding her arrest. The main questions are why Shailene was the only protestor arrested and why she was not read her Miranda rights prior to her arrest.
This is an ongoing story and will be updated.
UPDATE 3:05p.m.: According to a report by TMZ, 27 protestors were ultimately arrested after the events in Shailene's live stream.
