When Amal Clooney, formerly Amal Alamuddin, pinned down Hollywood's most unattainable bachelor, she piqued immediate interest. But soon after the public learned of the 36-year-old's impressive accomplishments as an international human rights lawyer, the conversation quickly turned from why her...to why him?
Fittingly, Barbara Walters has just named Clooney the Most Fascinating Person of 2014. And not just because of her headline-making marriage (though Walters does call that "one of the greatest achievements in human history"): Clooney has worked as a barrister to Julian Assange and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and has been an advisor on Syria to UN Special Envoy Kofi Annan.
"Amazingly, Amal has been the subject of very little snark or envy," Walters explained of how likable her pick is. "Maybe because we, like George Clooney, find it impossible to resist perfection. Or maybe because it is heartening to think that no matter how long it may take, the perfect someone is out there for everyone. And that, for us, makes her the most fascinating person of 2014."
And let us not forget that her sense of style has us watching her every move. "Amal Clooney is suddenly in that stratosphere that we reserve for the Jackie Os or the Princess Dis or Kate Middleton," Walters said. "That is, everything she does, says, or wears is officially fascinating."
Walters's list of the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2014 is predominantly made up of women, including Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift, Chelsea Handler, and Oprah Winfrey. Get a sneak peek below.
