Last night, we stopped by the Malibu Rum Island Spiced launch to help us get into the summer mindset. With DJ Harley Viera-Newton providing some upbeat tunes — her playlist included "Losing You" by Solange and "Anything Can Happen" by Ellie Goulding — and a sweeping view of the sunset from the Dream Downtown rooftop, we're even more anxious for the season's balmy nights. We were lucky enough to catch up with California girl Lauren Conrad at the beach-themed bash, who was eager to share her expert tips about summer entertaining, beauty, and fashion.
What are your top summer entertaining tips?
I try to take advantage of the good weather and be outside. I have a place down in Laguna, so on the fourth of July — or any excuse to have a barbecue — I get really excited. We are actually working on some blog posts on my site about taking traditional barbecue food and finding healthier options for it. Besides good food and drink, I think the crowd is important — you want to be surrounded by your good friends. I also love a theme, but that's just me! Anytime I do a big party there is always a theme to it which I am sure annoys everybody.
What themes do you have brewing for this summer?
Summer tends to be a little more casual, so the theme is more of a specific color palette for the decor. During the winter is when I'll make everyone dress up!
Do you have a favorite cocktail that you'll be serving up this season?
I've been making the Malibu Island Spiced with coconut water. It's a nice "girl" drink.
Tell us about your summer beauty regimen.
I like to tone it down for summer. I think that I trade in most colors and finishes. In fall and winter I wear bolder colors and matte finishes, but in the summer it's about healthy skin and a nice bronzer or highlighter. You can still do bright colors, but it's more like like a pop on the eyes or a washed out shimmer, and lips go to a gloss.
If you could go anywhere this summer where would you go?
This summer I'm going to go to Cabo and Nantucket.
What do you live in during the summer?
The things that I have been buying recently are vacation pieces — really fun prints, flowy dresses. Have you ever heard of ModCloth? I had never been on it but I stumbled upon it one night. There are really cute A-line dresses with conversational prints on them — just really sweet and perfect for summer.
What's your idea of the perfect summertime date?
I've recently discovered a couple of great rooftops in LA, so I think a rooftop bar would be really nice.
