Plaid Is the Unexpected Summer Trend Fashion People Can’t Stop Wearing

The season's most surprising print isn’t floral or striped.

Plaid isn’t just for fall anymore—and the Spring 2025 runways proved it. This season, designers across the board seemed to be reading from the same playbook: go checkered.

At Tommy Hilfiger, the preppy print made its way onto pocket-adorned capri pants and collared dresses. Ralph Lauren, in contrast, celebrated the intricate art of patchwork with a floor-sweeping maxi skirt crafted from contrasting pieces of checkered fabric. Meanwhile, Acne Studios embraced a double-plaid moment by pairing a multi-colored button-down shirt with a tartan bubble skirt shaped like a massive bow. Bottega Veneta, Burberry, and Kallmeyer each gave the grid a spin with breezy jackets, sharp designer handbags, and flowing blouses that made plaid feel surprisingly light on its feet.

I’ll admit it: even after clocking the runway’s collective obsession with plaid, I wasn’t entirely sold. To me, plaid has always screamed cold weather—thick flannels, puffer jackets, and not exactly what comes to mind when you think “summer capsule.”

But after spotting a parade of New Yorkers strutting around in the print, I’ve had a change of heart.

With temperatures on the rise, city dwellers are wearing a range of breezy basics covered in plaid—from barely-there tank tops to gauzy frocks. If you don’t believe me, just take a peek at the beloved TikTok account @ootd, a page dedicated to documenting the outfits of well-dressed urbanites.

Call me crazy, but I’m starting to think plaid might just give florals a run for their money this season. So yes, a shopping spree is imminent—and you’re coming with me. Below, a curated lineup of every plaid piece currently topping my wishlist.

Plaid Tops

For a maximal look, follow Acne Studios’s lead with a plaid-on-plaid approach.

What’s the best way to elevate a summer outfit? I’d suggest replacing your basic tees and tanks with a plaid shirt. Opt for sleeveless styles on scorching hot days and long-sleeved options for cooler evenings.

Plaid Dresses

According to Tommy Hilfiger, you should top off a plaid dress with white shoes and subtle accessories.

Behold, your secret to effortless summer styling. Choose one of the plaid dresses below, and all you’ll need to do is enhance your ensemble with a sleek handbag, a pair of simple sandals (or trendy sneakers), and gold jewelry. Pro tip: keep your accessories minimal so that your dress can do the talking.

Plaid Pants and Shorts

Warm weather calls for breathable bottoms that won’t make you overheat. In other words, swap your denim pants for these alternatives. With options like cropped capris, airy Bermuda shorts, and lightweight trousers, the following styles will keep you cool and comfortable.

Plaid Bags

For a sophisticated plaid bag, you can always count on Burberry to deliver.

If you’re hesitant to dive headfirst into the plaid trend, consider testing the waters with one of the subtle bags ahead. From spacious totes to small shoulder bags, these accessories will enhance your outfit without overwhelming your look.

Plaid Skirts
