As a beauty writer and editor whose favorite category is color cosmetics—which is oddly rarer than you’d think—I find that there are a handful of makeup products that really seem to intimidate people. I often hear folks say they find eyeshadow palettes overwhelming, for example, or express fear surrounding liquid eyeliner. A shocking entry on that list? Red lipstick. As classic and ubiquitous as it is, many people panic at the prospect of it being too bold, too bright, too… not them. Which I get. But I do firmly believe that there is a red lipstick for everyone; you just have to figure out which one fits your needs.
For example, if you’re all for a bold moment but have concerns about longevity (or getting lipstick on your teeth), consider a matte formula. “I’m a huge fan of matte reds because I think they look super chic, last longer, and make a statement,” says professional makeup artist Julianna Grogan. However, “if matte lips are too bold, there are many beautiful satin finishes that will be more moisturizing and nourishing for your lips.” Looking for max hydration? “There’s glossy reds for a little more glam and super hydration.”
You’ll also want to consider your formats (AKA the packaging it comes in). “The application wand is also important for ease of use; a liquid lipstick will have maximum pigment and payoff, but can be messier than the traditional bullet, and a pencil-style lipstick can give you really precise application and an effortless swipe,” says Grogan.
I spoke to Grogan and professional makeup artists Taylor Fitzgerald and Eddie Duyos—and drew on my extensive red lipstick collection and decades of experience with the hue—to round up the 11 best red lipsticks and compile expert tips for finding your dream red. Scroll on for more.
The Best Red Lipsticks
- Best Overall Red Lipstick: Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lipstick in Velvet Ribbon
- Best Liquid Red Lipstick: Maed Beauty Signature Lip Pigment Matte Liquid Lipstick
- Best Blue-Based Red Lipstick: NARS Powermatte High-Intensity Long-Lasting Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl
- Best Neutral Red Lipstick: Dior Rouge Dior in #999
- Best True Red Lipstick: MAC M·A·CximalSilky Matte Lipstick in Red Rock
Lisa Eldridge’s True Velvet Lipsticks are exactly what I think of when I hear the word “lipstick”: smooth application, rich color, gorgeous gold packaging that’s heavy and feels luxurious. Velvet Ribbon is a true red (the brand describes it as “pillar box”) with a satin finish that fades beautifully.
Finish: Satin
Format: Bullet
What I Love: Bold, one-swipe pigment; Elegant formula that goes on smoothly; Long wear that fades to a beautiful stain
What I Don't: Has a very slight floral smell and taste that could be off-putting to some
Review for MC: “I’ve worn this lipstick for years. True story: I went through my inbox and found my first receipt, dated Jan. 2021, and I don’t think anyone could ever do better. The shade instantly brightens my face, the color is so saturated, and it feels so comfortable. Tens across the board.” — Eden Stuart, Contributing Beauty Writer

Maed Beauty’s Signature Lip Pigment in Ritual Red is probably my all-timer silver medalist, second only to Velvet Ribbon (and even that mostly comes down to my preference for satin bullets over liquid mattes). The pigment is a gorgeous true red, and the formula is as comfortable as it is transfer-proof—which, as any liquid lipstick wearer knows, is quite the feat.
Finish: Matte
Format: Liquid
What I Love: Long-lasting; One-swipe pigment; Unique doe-foot applicator makes it easy to line and fill
What I Don't: Liquid formula can be drying to some
Review for MC “I’ve loved this liquid lipstick since the first time I swiped it on (which, fun fact, was right before this very picture). It’s a neutral true red that I’d wager looks great on every skin tone, and the formula lasts through coffee and croissants.” — ES

A favorite of red lipstick aficionado Taylor Swift, NARS Dragon Girl is a classic blue-based red with a matte finish and bold pigment payoff. Pro tip: If you prefer a little more warmth, Grogan says she occasionally mixes it with an orange-red shade, depending on the client’s skin tone.
Finish: Matte
Format: Pencil, Bullet
What I Love: Pencil format makes it easy to create a precise line; layers well for touch-ups
What I Don't: Can bleed
Review for MC: “The formula is unbeatable. It’s long-lasting, velvety, [and] perfectly matte without being too dry! It’s also in two formats, a lipstick bullet and a pencil. My favourite [is] the pencil, which I love because you can sharpen it for a precise application.” — JG

Grogan says neutral reds, like Dior’s iconic #999, work for everyone. She also gives this legendary lippie points for the wide variety of options: “It comes in so many finishes and application styles to suit everyone,” she says. “I’ve lost count of how many I’ve given to clients to keep, because everyone adores it.”
Finish: Satin, Matte
Format: Bullet, Liquid
What I Love: Available in multiple finishes and formats; Long-wearing; Great pigment
What I Don't: Pricy
Review for MC: “This is my go-to lipstick for when I want to feel like an Old Hollywood movie star. This bullet looks so chic when you pull it out of your (structured, ladylike) handbag, and the soft, almost powdery formula is easy to build upon. I sometimes like to tap this one on for an almost blurred lip effect.” — ES

Consider Red Rocks the Goldilocks of MAC’s rouge hues. (And considering just how many reds MAC offers, that’s really saying something.) While Russian Red and Ruby Woo lean blue, and Chili and Lady Danger are decidedly warm, this one is situated perfectly in the middle, a true neutral.
Finish: Satin-matte
Format: Bullet
What I Love: Great true-red hue; Comfortable satin-matte finish
What I Don't: Can be a touch patchy and texture-enhancing
Review: “This is one of the truest reds I’ve ever known. I genuinely don’t think it leans one way or another; just pure, middle-of-the-road crimson. The satin-matte finish wears easily on the lips, too.” — ES

Grogan has high praise for this liquid lipstick, which offers long wear time without dry, cracking discomfort. “My advice is to practice the application a few times to get a feel for the strong pigment and bold color,” she says. “Use Q-tips for any cleaning up around the sides, and always blot the first application with some tissue. Let it dry, then add another layer.”
Finish: Matte
Format: Liquid
What I Love: Highly pigmented; Gorgeous packaging; Easy to layer
What I Don't: Matte finish could be too drying for some
Review for MC: “I can’t get enough of this rich and highly pigmented formula. It’s super, super matte, lasts on the lips, looks expensive, [and is] chic and luscious. I come back to this formula time and time again. It’s always flattering, and it never fails me.” — JG
The name says it all: Hung Vanggo’s matte lipstick is as smooth as butter, with a satin-matte finish that feels super comfortable on the lips. Vanggo Red is by far the warmest-pulling red on this list (it reminds me of MAC’s Lady Danger), making it a great pick for those with golden undertones.
Finish: Satin
Format: Bullet
What I Love: Smooth formula; One-swipe pigment
What I Don't: Use your teeth whitening strips before this one, the orange undertone amplifies yellow
Review for MC: “What makes this lipstick stand out for me is the formula. Lots of lipsticks claim to be creamy, but this really is one of the most comfortable and silky lipsticks I’ve ever worn. You can wear it for hours without feeling a thing, truly.” — ES
Possibly my most-worn lipstick in college, Stila’s Long-Lasting Liquid Lipstick in the bright, true red shade Beso has a buildable formula that layers well. But honestly, in my experience, you barely need to layer it at all—without micellar water pads and a little patience, this lipstick isn’t going anywhere.
Finish: Matte
Format: Liquid
What I Love: Super pigmented and long-lasting
What I Don't: Drier formula that can flake and be uncomfortable for some
Review for MC: “It really lasts a long time, so it’s perfect for events and dinner parties. The wand is really easy to use to create the right curves around the mouth for gorgeous, defined lips.” — J.G.
Fitzgerald recommends Maybelline’s Super Stay Vinyl Ink to those looking for affordable options who “want to make a statement.” Another old-school favorite of mine, this is hands down one of the longest-wearing lipsticks I’ve ever tried, and the color selection is top-notch. (I used to favor the wine-red Pioneer.)
Finish: Matte
Format: Liquid
What I Love: Affordable; Highly pigmented; Range offers lots of red shades to choose from
What I Don't: Some could find this one a bit drying
Review for MC: “It’s such a rich tone, stays intact, and has an opaque finish.” — TF
For those intimidated by red lipstick (no shame!), or who just prefer to take a more minimalist approach to color, this sheer, featherweight liquid formula from Victoria Beckham is a must-try. Fitzgerald loves this subtle tint for a “soft pop of color.”
Finish: Sheer, natural-matte
Format: Liquid
What I Love: Sheer formula that’s easy to build upon; Lightweight feel
What I Don't: Applicator gets mixed reviews (some find it lacking durability)
Review for MC: “One of my favorite and most versatile ways to wear a red lip is just a soft wash of color, and her lip products are always a staple in my kit. The finish and shades are luxe and easy to apply.” — TF
If you love the on-the-go convenience of a multi-use product, Make Up For Ever’s Artist Color Crayon Waterproof Multi-Use Stick is the perfect “throw it in your tiny bag and head out the door” product. Flaming Hot Red is a highly vibrant red that leans slightly warm.
Finish: Satin
Format: Pencil
What I Love: Super pigmented but easily blendable
What I Don't: Thick crayon that can break relatively easily (so make sure not to roll up more than you need)
Review for MC: “I’ll admit that I’m not much of a multi-use girl, but every time I whip out one of MUFE’s Color Crayons, I reconsider my stance. They blend out beautifully with your fingers (great for the blurred lip trend!) and come in such a great, thoughtful range of colors.” — ES
How Do I Pick the Best Shade of Red Lipstick?
A shortcut to picking a red lipstick shade you’ll love? Consulting the color wheel. “If you have cooler, pink undertones, a blue-based red can be especially striking,” says Duyos. “For warmer or golden undertones, a true red or a slightly warmer red will feel more complementary and natural.”
That said, the only hard and fast rule when it comes to color is that you love it. “Makeup should be fun and playful,” says Fitzgerald. “Just be sure to consider what tone complements the outfit you’re wearing, and the tones you’re incorporating into the rest of the face.”
Should I Wear Matte or Satin Red Lipstick?
When selecting a formula and finish—think satin or matte—and a format (i.e., bullet or liquid), consider your lip condition, desired longevity, and how you prefer your lip products to feel. “Matte formulas tend to offer the longest wear, while satin or cream finishes feel more hydrating and comfortable for everyday use,” says Duyos. “Liquid formulas can give you both intensity and staying power, while traditional bullets are great for easy touch-ups on the go.”
But ultimately, your best red lipstick will be like your best SPF: something you enjoy wearing and reapplying. “It’s the focal point of your look, so choosing a formula you’re confident in executing, wearing, and potentially touching up is key,” says Fitzgerald.
How Do I Apply Red Lipstick?
- Prep your base: Much like how you’d apply a priming moisturizer ahead of foundation, you’ll want to make sure your lips are ready for red. “A nonnegotiable step is to apply some kind of moisturiser to your lips and let it soak in while you do the rest of your makeup,” says Grogan. “Then blot it off before you start your red lip.”
- Work on your technique: Red lipstick can be intimidating, but approaching the process with a technique in mind can make it less so. Duyos suggests using a lip brush to get a precise line, while Fitzgerald likes to do what she calls reverse lining. "Instead of starting with liner, start with lipstick, applying it just next to the lip line,” she explains. “Then, I like to finish it with liner to make it crisp, and clean the edges with concealer and a flat brush. There’s something less intimidating about perfecting a red lip when the lipstick is on first for some reason.”
- Be prepared to tidy up: Speaking of cleanup, “the number one tip I have for applying red lipstick is to have Q-tips on hand to clean up the edges of the mouth and really perfect the look,” says Grogan. “A cleanser like a micellar water works perfectly, too.”
