Emma Watson Confronts the Creepy Side of Silicon Valley in 'The Circle' Trailer

When your slick new employer may actually be a cult...

In all the Beauty and the Beast excitement, it's been easy to forget Emma Watson's arguably even more intriguing 2017 project. In the upcoming adaptation of Dave Eggers' haunting 2013 novel The Circle, Watson stars as Mae Holland, an ambitious college graduate who lands a job at a prestigious Silicon Valley tech company and comes to realize all is not what it seems.

The first trailer shows Mae acing The Circle's rigorous interview process: Asked to name her biggest fear, she replies "unfulfilled potential." That ought to make her a perfect fit for the company, which focuses on "the perfectibility of human beings," and is run by real-life perfect human being Tom Hanks. The Circle can end hunger, cure any disease, and share knowledge unconditionally–but at a cost, as the increasingly disturbing trailer makes clear.

Written and directed by James Ponsoldt, The Circle also stars John Boyega in his first major post-Star Wars role. It will hit theaters April 28, 2017.
