For the First Time Ever, Barbie Can Wear Flats

Mattel is introducing a host of major changes to its iconic doll line.

The one thing a girl has always known about her Barbie doll is that Barbie only wears heels. In fact, her feet are anatomically engineered to look like they're permanently perched in a pair of 4-inch pumps.

That's all about to change with the newest set of dolls from Mattel's Barbie Fashionistas line, which will include Barbies with adjustable ankles so they can wear flat shoes for the first time.

In addition to the amazing news that Barbies will be able to wear flats like normal humans, the Fashionista line will include Barbies of eight different skin tones, 14 different facial sculpts, 18 eye colors, 22 hair styles, and 23 hair colors—again, making Barbie a little more like you and me.

There's no word on if or when an official Mattel plus-size Barbie is in the works, but in plastic world, this is all huge news. One small step for Barbie, one huge leap for womankind.
