For the very first time in its auspicious, shirtless history, the 2015 FDNY "Calendar of Heroes" features both male and female firefighters. That's thanks to the inclusion of Danae Mines, of Engine Company 60 in the South Bronx. Mines, who's been a firefighter for 11 years, told The New York Daily News she'd always wanted to feature in the calendar, but had previously been told it was for guys only. This year, however, she attended an open call — the only female (out of the 41 female firefighters in the FDNY) to throw her hat helmet in the ring. "I was a little nervous," she admitted to NYDN, "[but I wasn't going to let anyone tell me I couldn't do what I wanted to do."
And she made the cut, though unlike her male counterparts, she's fully clothed in her photo. Abs or no abs, it's all good: "I wanted my picture in the calendar so that young girls and young women can see me and know that they can do this job," Mines explained.
The 2015 FDNY "Calendar of Heroes" is on sale now at $15.95 via the official FDNY "Fire Zone" e-shop. All proceeds benefit the Fire Department's Foundation, to pay for equipment and training for firefighters, as well as to promote fire safety.
