I Take Shiny Hair Very Seriously—These 10 Hair Serums Are Always in My Shower

From overnight repair to hair loss.

Truth be told, hair serums are pretty much the only styling product I consistently use. My hair is very dense, which is great, but it's also incredibly fine, which means anything even slightly heavy—hair creams, oils, most leave-ins—can take it from freshly washed to flat and greasy in about thirty seconds. Hair serums, on the other hand, give me the benefits without that weighed-down feeling. A drop or two through the ends adds shine, smooths frizz, and keeps it looking and feeling healthy.

That said, a hair serum isn’t really one specific product anymore. Some are purely about shine and polish—the kind you smooth over the ends after a blowout when you want a glass-like finish. Others focus on strengthening damaged strands or calming frizz throughout the day. And my latest favorites are designed to work overnight, helping support hair health while you sleep.

As celebrity hairstylist Glen Operazna explains, the right nighttime formula can quietly do a lot of heavy lifting: by morning, hair should feel “softer, healthier, smoother, and more resilient, with improved shine and manageability.” He also points out that many of these formulas now include heat protection, helping shield strands from the styling damage that tends to follow the next day.

Below are the hair serums I reach for most often—and the different roles they play in my routine.

Night Shift

My favorite type of hair serum is designed to do its best work while you’re asleep. These overnight formulas typically lean into reparative oils, peptides, or bond-building ingredients that help support damaged strands. I like applying them from mid-lengths to ends after my nightly shower and just before bed. The formula absorbs overnight—by morning, my hair feels noticeably softer and is ready to go for the next day.

Glass-Hair Finish

Nobody can deny the power of super-glossy, super-shiny hair. It's just chic and expensive-looking. These serums are all about polish, smoothing the cuticle so light reflects off the hair more evenly.

Frizz Fighters

Humidity, heat styling, and sweat all leave my hair in a chaotic state that's usually hard to remedy. That's why I prevent it from happening in the first place with a hair serum that smooths and seals the cuticle. This helps control frizz and block moisture from entering the hair shaft, preventing the poof.

Damage Control

If your hair has been through it—bleach, color, hot tools, all of the above—these formulas help reinforce fragile strands. Many contain bond-supporting technology, proteins, or strengthening oils that temporarily fill in weak spots along the hair shaft, making hair feel stronger and look less frayed.

Scalp First

Hair health really does start at the scalp, which is why scalp-focused serums have become such a big category. These formulas often feature ingredients like peptides, niacinamide, caffeine, or botanical extracts that help support a balanced scalp environment, which is ideal for hair growth.
