Now that the Harry Potter franchise has finished (sob) and we've unearthed all the possible plot holes keeping us up at night, fans have turned their attention to making a prequel film about Lord Voldemort—and Warner Bros. has just given it the go ahead. Yaaaaas.
Earlier this year, startup Tryangle Films set up a Kickstarter page in a bid to raise funds for their project Voldemort: Origins Of The Heir, a film based around Tom Riddle's life before he became the Dark Lord.
The fundraising campaign was later pulled, and just as Harry Potter fans were beginning to give up hope on there ever being another movie in the series, a trailer for the unofficial movie made its way onto YouTube. It racked up millions of views, and shows the heir of Gryffindor Grisha McLaggen on the hunt for Tom Riddle, after he disappears following the poisoning of Hufflepuff's heir by a house elf.
Which sounds incredible, right? And is made only better by the news that Warner Bros have reached an agreement with Tryangle news over the unofficial prequel, providing it is only released on YouTube "in a nonprofit way."
Voldemort: Origins of The Heir director Director Gianmaria Pezzato confirmed to Polygon: "We had a private and confidential discussion with Warner Bros. who contacted us during the period of the crowdfunding campaign. The only thing we can say is that they let us proceed with the film, in a nonprofit way, obviously."
He also went on to explain the inspiration behind the movie, adding: "We wondered, 'What made Tom Riddle become Voldemort? What happened in those years, and what really went down at Hogwarts when he came back?' A lot goes unspoken. This is story we want to tell: The rise of the Dark Lord before Harry Potter and his first demise."
Count us (and all these Harry Potter fans) in!
