Lady Gaga Accidentally Pays Tribute to Judy Garland's 'A Star Is Born' Look

This is such a spooky coincidence.

Lady Gaga absolutely outdid herself for the 2019 Golden Globes (opens in new tab). The Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama nominee arrived on the red carpet wearing a sweeping lilac Valentino Haute Couture gown.

The dramatic dress has an interesting tie to A Star Is Born too. Judy Garland wore an extremely similar costume when she played the same role in the 1954 version of the film. Fans quickly noticed the lookalike outfits and made the comparison on Twitter, shocked at the clear similarities between the two.

In fact, Judy Garland was also nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in A Star Is Born — and won (opens in new tab)

However, Lady Gaga confirmed she did not purposefully plan the fashion homage. When ET's Nancy O'Dell (opens in new tab) showed her Garland's costume, the pop star replied, "Thank you for showing me that. It made my night."

The first film version of A Star Is Born was released in 1937, followed by the 1954 version with Garland, a 1976 remake with Barbra Streisand, and most recently Bradley Cooper's interpretation starring Gaga. The 2018 film received five nominations at this year's Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Drama.

Gaga received critical acclaim for her depiction of Ally Campana, a nightclub singer-songwriter who is discovered by Jackson "Jack" Maine. Co-star Bradley Cooper actually choose her for that role after seeing her perform "La Vie en Rose" at a charity fundraiser — a song he would then add to the film.

This isn't Lady Gaga's first Golden Globes nomination though. She was first nominated in 2012 for Best Original Song – Motion Picture when she sang "Hello Hello" with Elton John on the Gnomeo & Juliet soundtrack.

In 2016 she received a nomination in an acting category for her work on American Horror Story: Hotel — and later picked up a statue for it.
