We are truly living in a Golden Age of Drugstore Beauty. Sure, there have always been incredible finds on those hollowed aisles—I’ve written an ode to my love of drugstore mascaras—but affordable cosmetics brands really have stepped up their game in the last decade or so. And nowhere is that more apparent than in the nail space.
Growing up, I distinctly remember the drugstore nail polish offerings consisting of a limited range of neutrals, reds, and pinks, with formulas that would chip if you looked at them too hard. (As well as the odd bright blue or neon yellow that was somehow even less durable.) But today, you’ll find lacquers that claim to last a week or longer, special effects toppers that rival their higher-end counterparts, and even high-shine gel formulas. And the best part? They almost always come in under $15 a pop.
That accessibility works especially well with the manicure trends everyone is gravitating toward right now. Nail artist Ramon "Prince" Duran previously told MC that clients are leaning into simple manicures with just enough detail to keep them interesting. “I’m seeing a lot of soft, elevated nails with a twist—sheer bases with micro detail or subtle dimension,” he says. In other words, the kind of manicure that doesn’t require a salon-only polish—just a great shade, a little creativity, and a formula that actually lasts.
Because spring is well underway, now is the best time to play with your nails, especially at prices that won't break the bank. Scroll on for some of my favorite drugstore nail polishes, including reds and pinks—hey, they're classics for a reason—along with vibrant pigments, innovative formulas, and more.
Fiery Reds
Whether you’re looking to be swarmed by suitors via the red nail theory or simply love the vintage vibes of a solid red mani, these polishes will give you classic crimson claws.
Let it be known that, among all of OPI’s legendary red nail polishes, my actual favorite is Coca-Cola Red, a perfect true red. Alas, it’s discontinued (at least at the moment), so I’ll shout out the ultimate drugstore red crowdpleaser, Big Apple Red. It’s bright and glossy, with a very slight coolness to the neutral undertones.
Revlon’s polishes are kind of slept on, in my opinion, but y'all need to wake up because these lacquers are smooth, shiny, and long-lasting. My favorite selling point, though, is that many of the shades, like the iconic Revlon Red and Cherries in the Snow, have a coordinating lipstick—perfect for creating a trendy matchy-matchy moment.
Soft Pinks & Neutral Nudes
Ideal for creating French manicures or for soft nail looks that go with anything, neutral pinks, beiges, and browns have universal appeal. These brands produce some of the best.
Essie’s Ballet Slippers and OPI’s Bubble Bath are the most beloved bases for French manis, and they deserve their flowers, but don’t forget the brand that literally invented the design. Rose-Colored Glasses is a dainty and demure sheer rose that’s just begging to be wrapped around a bouquet (be that at a wedding or the farmer’s market).
If you really want a nude manicure—I’m talking a whisper of a hint of a hue—there’s Zoya’s Naked Manicure Perfectors. These sheer polishes are kind of like tinted moisturizer for your nails: They just kind of even everything out and add a healthy sheen.
Bold Effects
Think you have to turn to expensive lacquers or gels to get fun finishes and vibrant hues with great color payoff? Think again.
Choosing a Nails Inc. polish to include on this list was honestly an impossible task; do I go with a rave-ready Naked In Neon, or one of the chameleon-like Thermochromics? While you can’t go wrong with either, I’m personally partial to the Euphoria collection, which provides soft chrome and iridescent finishes without the messy powder.
Not only is Sally Hansen right up there with ORLY when it comes to fun collabs (I have several polishes from the Despicable Me collection), but the brand also offers loads of cool finishes and colors in its permanent collections. Along with the polish above, check out the shifty, sparkly Miracle Gel Special Effects Top Coats and the Insta-Dri Chrome Nail Polish Collection.
Start & Finish
The best manicures start with well-laid base coats— and last thanks to durable top coats. I’ve tried many in my day, and these two stand head and shoulders above the competition.
Fun fact: Ideally, you’d allow regular nail polish two full hours to dry down. Since most of us can’t (or, let’s be real, won’t) accommodate that, this super-fast-drying top coat is a must. Not only does it lock everything in faster than it takes to decide on takeout, but it also provides a rock-hard, chip-free finish, too.
Gels Galore
Having been born in the 1990s, I remember a time when gel nail polish wasn’t even available in retail stores, much less at the drugstore. Thankfully, those dark days are behind us, and now we can all channel our inner nail tech to create manis that last. They may be a little more expensive than their counterparts, but these kits come with extra polish for an investment that's definitely worth it.
This Amazon-famous brand can now be found at Target, which, as far as I’m concerned, means it's now a drugstore brand, too. Either way, it offers loads of affordable, long-lasting gel polishes in a variety of colors and cool finishes (including this fun Fairy Garden Cat-Eye collection).
I initially found the concept of an LED-free gel to be extremely sus—again, I’m super hard on my nails—but this two-step system (a polish and a top coat) really surprised me. When I wear it, I can go a full week without any chipping, making it my go-to when I do opt for a classic mani.
