I Refuse to Spend Hundreds on Skincare—Which Is Why I Love an Affordable Drugstore Serum

Beauty on a budget.

For most of my life, I equated a "good serum" with an "expensive serum." I bought into the idea that if a bottle didn't come in luxe packaging with a three-digit price tag, it couldn't possibly deliver real results. Then I became a beauty editor and began testing everything—with the background knowledge of what skincare ingredients do and how they work—and that belief unraveled quickly. What I've discovered? Some of the most effective face serums live at the drugstore.

Drugstore serums have always been good, but they've leveled up even more over the past decade. You can now find formulas with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, retinol, peptides, and barrier-repair ingredients for a fraction of what prestige brands charge. And they're not watered-down versions, either. Many are developed in the same labs (yes, really!), by the same chemists, and designed to solve the same skin concerns: dehydration, fine lines, discoloration, breakouts.

What I love about this category is how accessible it makes skincare. For results, you need consistency. (Did you know a vitamin C serum should be used completely within two months?!) When you can afford to actually finish a bottle and repurchase it, that's when you can visibly see the benefits in your skin. Below are the drugstore serums I genuinely use and recommend to everyone in my life.

Brightening Drugstore Serums

Vitamin C is the ingredient to reach for when your skin needs a pick-me-up. It's one of the most-researched antioxidants with powerful protection against environmental aggressors (hi, UV, pollution and whacky temperatures). It also brightens uneven tone, softens the look of dark spots, and even boosts collagen production. At the drugstore, look for "stabilized" labeling, as those will be less likely to oxidize and become ineffective.

Hydrating Drugstore Serums

Everyone needs a hyaluronic acid serum in their skincare arsenal at all times. There are literally no drawbacks to using it, and it's a very gentle, skin-friendly ingredient. It works by pulling water into the skin, which is why my complexion looks smoother and plumper after using it. My tip? Apply a moisturizer rich in occlusives (think: squalane, butters, and petrolatum) to trap the moisture in for extra softness.

Anti-Aging Drugstore Serums

The term "anti-aging" is definitely an outdated term. We're not trying to stop time; we're just trying to keep skin healthy and resilient as it changes. This category is really about texture and long-term support. Ingredients like retinol help smooth fine lines and encourage cell turnover, peptides support firmness, and sunscreen prevents damage in the first place. While looking for this category at the drugstore, I always recommend a retinol.

Acne-Fighting Drugstore Serums

Acne serums today don't just dry out your skin. Instead, they combine chemical exfoliators and niacinamide with other acne-friendly ingredients to avoid that stripped, irritated feeling. The goal is calmer skin and fewer breakouts without the old-school effects.

Soothing Drugstore Serums

These serums are ideal for pretty much everything else. Centella asiatica, oat, ceramides, and allantoin help repair the skin barrier and calm inflammation, which makes every active in your routine work and feel better. I always keep these on hand after trying something new, overdoing exfoliation, or just when I want something gentle and calming.
