Surprise! Meghan Markle is headed back to the United States by herself, right now, The Times is reporting. The Duchess of Sussex is traveling to New York on a commercial flight to support her friend Serena Williams in the final of the U.S. Open.

“It is a last-minute trip,” a source said. Meghan is “excited to support her friend, and then come back.”

The outlet notes that Meghan has been considering the trip to New York since watching Williams win the quarter final earlier this week. Meghan stayed up to watch Williams win the semi-final last night, which ended at 1 A.M. London time, The Times wrote. At 7 A.M. today, Meghan boarded a flight abroad to be there for her friend, who will complete in her final match on Saturday at 4 P.M. Williams is playing against Bianca Andreescu.

Meghan traveled abroad without her staff, Prince Harry, or Archie, but her security team is with her, The Times notes.

The Duchess of Sussex attended two of Williams' Wimbledon matches earlier this summer. She got significant media coverage for her appearance at the ladies' singles final with her sister-in-law Kate Middleton. Williams did not win that match, and Meghan was visibly upset about the loss. The Duchess of Cambridge comforted her. “Kate put her hand out and rubbed Meghan’s back to console her,” a close observer told People in July.

This is Meghan's second trip to New York City this year. She first went to the city for her baby shower, which Williams co-hosted, in January.
