Fashion's love affair with all things Parisian shows no signs of waning, and wearing your francophile heart written all over your sweatshirt is all the rage. Morgane Sezalory founder and head of design of French-based brand Sezane is partnering with Madewell on a limited-edition capsule collection, featuring her sold-out-all-over France topper that reads "La Superbe." It translates to, "The Great One or The Beautiful One and has this ironic meaning that I find very Parisian," Sezalory explains, "La Superbe can also be something cute, affectionate … it is what my mum used to call me as a little girl."
And the offerings don't end there. In the first time that Sezane is available stateside, the designer looked to meld the ethos of Paris and New York style, "I wanted to strike a balance between our two cities … I imagined pieces for two women. First, a French woman trying to "fit" in New York—she wants to be chic, but cool and casual in that way Americans do so well. Then I thought about an American woman wanting to bring a Parisian touch to her wardrobe. The colors are quiet, heels aren't too high."
The results are 16-pieces that fill that cool-girl void in your closet, think gamine blouses, tweedy minis, boyish jackets and louche ankle booties—in leopard or rich caramel leather. "Paris still has this sophisticated image, both posh and cool," she explains. "La Nouvelle vague, les cafés, la philosophie, le cinéma, la mode. C'est Paris! Even though the Paris I know is much more complex than that." We'll take a bit of Sezalory's Paris when the collection hits Madewell stores and madewell.com (opens in new tab) tomorrow.
