It's time to give your skin a little TLC. After applying sunscreen religiously all summer (because you've been wearing SPF every day, right?), your skin is probably feeling a little coated. For a thorough sloughing (and a more even self-tanner application, if you decide to go that route), nothing beats a body scrub to make you feel baby soft and really, really clean. "Body scrubs are excellent because they remove dead skin and give you a natural glow," says Mayra Ramirez, YHI SPA manager at the Paradisus Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic.
How can you get a good scrub?
Splurge: Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish, $65
Steal: For an easy DIY fix, Ramirez recommends a homemade blend of oats and brown sugar (combine a quarter cup of each dry ingredient and mix with water until it forms a thick, yummy paste) to gently remove dirt and dry skin. Sugar naturally contains alpha hydroxy acids that speed up with the exfoliation process (making it easier to scrub away dry flakes) while oats are moisturizing and soothing. For the best results, gently scrub in a circular motion instead of back and forth.
However, if you recently overdid it in the sun, it's not time to exfoliate (even if you're starting to peel). Skip the scrub and try an oatmeal bath. Here's Ramirez's favorite recipe:
1. Boil 100 grams of oatmeal in two liters of water for four minutes.
2. Pour the watery oatmeal mixture into a warm (but not too hot) bath.
3. Bathe for 25 minutes.
The oatmeal will reduce itching (this also works with bug bites) and help speed up healing after your naughty sunburn.
