Demi Lovato is back and better than ever (even with her very messy breakup with Max Ehrich, who p much refuses to leave her alone). Despite 2020 being, well, 2020, Demi is still out here doing the damn thing, as evidenced by her new song and Billboard Music Awards performance tonight!
Demi just dropped "Commander in Chief," which is a message to President Donald Trump. A quick flip through your middle school history textbook will tell you that the U.S. Army's Commander in Chief is none other than Mr. President, so I rest my case on the connection, but Demi also went ahead and confirmed to CNN herself that yes, this song involves Trump.
In "Commander in Chief," Demi speaks to Trump directly and tells him his senseless actions have caused our country so much pain. Demi lays all her thoughts on the table while acknowledging that she is privileged enough to not suffer, calling out Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the way he condemned those marching to honor Black lives. In short: It's the song we both need and deserve ahead of this year's election.
Listen to "Commander in Chief" right here or tonight at the BBMAs, and learn the lyrics, below:
Were you ever taught when you were young
If you mess with things selfishly, they're bound to come undone?
I'm not the only one
That's been affected and resented every story you've spun
And I'm a lucky one
'Cause there are people worse off that have suffered enough
Haven't they suffered enough?
But you can't get enough of
Shutting down systems for personal gain
Fighting fires with flyers and praying for rain
Do you get off on pain?
We'rе not pawns in your game
Commander in Chief, honestly
If I do the things you do
I couldn't sleep, seriously
Do you even know the truth?
We're in a state of crisis, people are dying
While you line your pockets deep
Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still
Be able to breathe?
We were taught when we were young
If we fight for what's right, there won't be justice for just some
Won't give up, stand our ground
We'll be in the streets while you're bunkering down
Loud and proud, best believe
We'll still take a knee while you're
Commander in Chief, honestly
If I do the things you do
I couldn't sleep, seriously
Do you even know the truth?
We're in a state of crisis, people are dying
While you line your pockets deep
Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still
Be able to breathe?
Won't give up, stand our ground
We'll be in the streets while you're bunkering down
Won't give up, stand our ground
We'll be in the streets while you're
Commander in Chief, honestly
If I do the things you do
I couldn't sleep, seriously
Do you even know the truth?
We're in a state of crisis, people are dying
While you line your pockets deep
Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still
Be able to breathe?
Able to breathe
