Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of a thousand foam fingers, Miley Cyrus has experienced something of a reinvention in the past few years. It's an overused expression, but the Disney star has broken literally all the rules.

Sure, people are quick to accuse Miley of attention-seeking, but it's important to note that she's used her increasingly large platform to champion LGBTQ rights, and has herself come out as gender fluid (to quote: "I'm just equal. I'm just even. It has nothing to do with any parts of me or how I dress or how I look. It's literally just how I feel.")

With this quote in mind, it's hard not to read into Miley's performance on NBC variety show, Maya & Marty, where she sang Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" in a suit, and then ripped off her pants for a rendition of Peggy Lee's "I'm a Woman."

Watch the video below for Miley's stunning vocals, plus a simple reminder that when it comes to gender, it's fine to break those invisible barriers.
