The Perfect Getaway: Taking on Escape 2 New York

When the dog days of summer hit, there's nothing like a day- or weekend-long trip out of Manhattan to leave a girl feeling revived and reinvigorated--and if there's live music and/or face-painting involved, so much the better.

When the dog days of summer hit, there's nothing like a day- or weekend-long trip out of Manhattan to leave a girl feeling revived and reinvigorated—and if there's live music and/or face-painting involved, so much the better. Last Saturday, we headed out to Southampton for the first-ever Escape 2 New York music festival. With a stellar concert lineup that included Patti Smith, The Vaccines, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, delicious food from NYC favorites The Fat Radish and Asiadog, and plenty of enticing vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to vintage sunglasses, it was a weekend not to be missed. We arrived at Southampton's beautiful Shinnecock Reservation a little after noon to find the grounds mostly empty--a sure sign that Friday's afterparties must have raged into the wee hours. Of course, the peace and quiet didn't last long…

While their parents and older siblings staked out spots near the main stage, little ones could take a (supervised!) dip in the panda pit. As the day wore on, I definitely spotted a few over-21s taking advantage of this festival perk, too…

Escape 2 NY was inspired by the UK's uber-popular Secret Garden Party, a fact reflected in the floral decorations we spied all around the grounds.

ventured into this "rave tent" in between shows—only to find a sleeping partygoer inside, who seemed none too pleased to have his nap interrupted. Oops.

Festival attendees had the option of bunking in teepees stocked with fresh bed linens and other amenities. Don't call it camping, folks—this was "glamping" at its finest.

My partner-in-crime for the day, NYLON's Liza Darwin, and I sought shelter from the blazing sun in a hollowed-out art installation.

Wandering into this streamer-strewn thicket, I felt like I'd stumbled onto the set of True Blood—very mystical, no? Bonus points for spotting Waldo in the woods.

Brit rockers The Vaccines are one of my favorite new bands right now, and their sundown set was all sorts of amazing. If you've never heard of these guys, do yourselves a favor and download "Blow It Up" and "Wetsuit," stat.

The ladies of Au Revoir Simone, from left: Annie Hart, Erika Forster, and Heather D'Angelo. Not only are the Brooklyn trio sweet as can be, they also managed to play a full set while keeping those perfect bangs intact. Hello, hair envy.

The lovely Lisa Salzer of Lulu Frost. How cool are her porcupine-quill earrings? Lisa hosted a pop-up boutique on the festival grounds to showcase her vintage trinkets.

Here's more of the L-atitude pop-up shop, filled with fun wares like embellished mochila bags and thread-wrapped bangles. Any opportunity to shop in between concerts is fine by me.

Toad-ally cool. Still not quite sure what this frog-bike was meant to achieve, but it made for a fun photo op nonetheless.

Check out MC's street style from the other music festival this weekend: Lollapalooza.
