Determining Who Spent More Money on Coffee: 'Gilmore Girls' or 'Friends'

Warning: caffeine jitters ahead.

Lorelai and Rory Gilmore were the picture of caffeination on Gilmore Girls. But the amount of money they spent on java was small beans compared to the characters on Friends

In honor of last night's epic Friends reunion and the revival of Gilmore Girls, PayPal crunched the numbers to see which show's characters spent more cash on coffee.  Beware: Just reading these huge numbers might give you a contact buzz.

During the 153 episodes of Gilmore Girls, the mother-daughter duo drank an average of two cups of coffee per episode. But PayPal points out that one of those cups of joe was usually brewed at home for toting around in a travel mug. So, if a home brew costs about 50 cents, and coffee at Luke's Diner or a cafe in New York City comes to about $2.50 a mug (accounting for price differences in Connecticut versus N.Y.C.), that means they spent about $765 on coffee. (We expected that number to be a lot higher, TBH.)

On Friends, PayPal deducted that Phoebe, Monica, Joey, Ross, Chandler, and Rachel also drank roughly 2 cups per episode. But the average cost of a cup at Central Perk coffee shop clocks in at about $3.50. Over the 236 episodes, the group drank $9,912 worth of coffee, or $1,652 each.

So, that old money-saving tip really is true. Making your own coffee does save a lot of dough.
