The Weeknd's 'After Hours' Lyrics Seem to Be About Leaving Bella Hadid

At midnight last night, The Weeknd released the third single off his upcoming album After Hours—and, yet again, the lyrics give a rare look into the artist's thoughts about love and relationships, along with his regrets ending things with one girl.

There's some proof lyrically that The Weeknd's on-off ex-girlfriend Bella Hadid is the inspiration behind these lyrics. Lines like "My heart belongs to you / I'll risk it all for you I won't just leave / This time, I'll never leave," seem to suggest he left before but wants to seriously commit to Hadid now.

Even in their last time dating, The Weeknd was contemplating marrying Hadid. In November 2018, Us Weekly reported that The Weeknd was ready to put a ring on it, with a source claiming the two were "madly in love" with each other and "a proposal is on the horizon." Hadid and The Weeknd ended up splitting in August 2019.

The Weeknd may have even thrown in a reference to his relationship with Selena Gomez in the bridge. He sings, "I know it's all my fault / Made you put down your guard / I know I made you fall / I said you were wrong for me / I lied to you, I lied to you, I lied to you (To you) / Can't hide the truth, I stayed with her in spite of you / You did some things that you regret, still right for you / 'Cause this house is not a home."

The Weeknd and Hadid originally ended things in November 2016. He started dating Gomez in January 2017. The Weeknd and Gomez made headlines for unfollowing Hadid on Instagram, and she eventually unfollowed both of them as well.

Hadid even spoke out about how hard going through the breakup was in February 2017 to Teen Vogue, shortly after The Weeknd and Gomez made their relationship public. "It was my first breakup—or second, next to the horse—and so public," she said. "As an outsider, you might think I handled it so well, but it's always in your heart, and you always feel it very heavily. It'll be hard for a while. Love hurts, but you have to pull through."

"I'll always respect him, and I'll always love him," she continued. "Sometimes you want to be sad about it or handle it differently, but at the end of the day, you never want to burn a bridge that you've fought so hard to build."

Gomez and The Weeknd ended their relationship in October 2017. In November, The Weeknd was seen hanging at Hadid's apartment again. By summer 2018, he and Hadid were back on. They moved in together that fall. Then, almost a year later, they ended things again.

Hadid and The Weeknd are on good terms now, though. He attended her birthday party in October 2019, which prompted some outlets to report they were back on again. The Weeknd's rep denied this, saying they "just attended as friends.” They have not been photographed on any outings since.

But that may not mean The Weeknd isn't still holding out hope for a future with Hadid. A source told E! in August 2019 that both hoped for an eventual reconciliation then: "They hope to get back together at one point but for now are focusing on themselves and their projects." And the lyrics to "After Hours" give plenty of evidence that The Weeknd may still be pining for that future with Hadid. Here are the lyrics, via Genius. You can listen to the song below too.

Verse 1
Thought I almost died in my dream again (Baby, almost died)
Fightin' for my life, I couldn't breathe again
I'm fallin' into new (Oh, oh)
Without you goin' smooth (Fallin' in)
'Cause my heart belongs to you
I'll risk it all for you
I won't just leave
This time, I'll never leave
I wanna share babies
Protection, we won't need
Your body next to me
Is just a memory
I'm fallin' in too deep, oh
Without you, I'm asleep
It's on me, only me, oh
Talk to me, without you, I can't breathe

Verse 2

My darkest hours
Girl, I felt so alone inside of this crowded room
Different girls on the floor, distractin' my thoughts of you
I turned into the man I used to be, to be
Put myself to sleep
Just so I can get closer to you inside my dreams
Didn't wanna wake up 'less you were beside me
I just wanted to call you and say, and say

Chorus

Oh, baby
Where are you now when I need you most?
I'd give it all just to hold you close
Sorry that I broke your heart, your heart

Verse 3

Never comin' through
I was running away from facin' reality
Wastin' all of my time on living my fantasies
Spendin' money to compensate, compensate
'Cause I want you, baby
I'll be livin' in Heaven when I'm inside of you
It was definitely a blessing, wakin' beside you
I'll never let you down again, again

Chorus

Oh, baby
Where are you now when I need you most?
I'd give it all just to hold you close
Sorry that I broke your heart, your heart
I said, baby
I'll treat you better than I did before
I'll hold you down and not let you go
This time, I won't break your heart, your heart, yeah

Bridge

I know it's all my fault
Made you put down your guard
I know I made you fall
I said you were wrong for me
I lied to you, I lied to you, I lied to you (To you)
Can't hide the truth, I stayed with her in spite of you
You did some things that you regret, still right for you
'Cause this house is not a home

Chorus

Without my baby
Where are you now when I need you most?
I gave it all just to hold you close
Sorry that I broke your heart, your heart
And I said, baby
I'll treat you better than I did before
I'll hold you down and not let you go
This time, I won't break your heart, your heart, no
