Venus Williams Was Involved in a Fatal Car Crash

Her lawyer says the incident, which lead to the death of a 79-year-old man, was an accident.

Venus William caused a fatal car crash earlier this month, according to police.

Palm Beach Gardens police say witnesses saw the tennis star run a red light, which caused the June 9 crash. The incident led to the death of a 79-year-old passenger who was in an oncoming car. Jerome Barson was taken to hospital and died two weeks later.

"The driver of [Williams' car] is at fault for violating the right of way," the investigating officer concluded.

Barson was traveling with his wife, who was driving the car through an intersection when the crash happened. The BBC reports that Williams darted in front of them and was unable to clear the way fast enough due to traffic.

Ms Williams' lawyer Malcolm Cunningham has described the collision as an "accident."

"Ms Williams entered the intersection on a green light," he told CNN in a statement. "The police report estimates that Ms Williams was traveling at 5mph when Mrs Barson crashed into her. Authorities did not issue Ms Williams with any citations or traffic violations. This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one."
